Todavía estudiante, le envían a la Misión de Chad en 1970. Es ordenado sacerdote en Valencia en 1975, y a continuación funda la Parroquia de la Santa Esperanza en Wallia (N'djaména). Sin abandonar su puesto de sacerdote de esa parroquia, crea INADES-FORMATION TCHAD, filial de la ONG panafricana de formación en el medio rural, que dirige hasta 1989. Posteriormente, regresa a España, donde durante cuatro años dirige en Valencia ACCIÓN POR EL TERCER MUNDO, una ONG de ayuda a los países en desarrollo. En 1993 es enviado a Camerún como capellán del Centro Católico Universitario de Yaoundé.
