An artist charts the historical context and aftermath of a concert—by Leonard Cohen at the Ramallah Cultural Palace in Palestine—that never happened. Michael Rakowitz's project I'm good at love, I'm good at hate, it's in between I freeze (2009–ongoing) charts the historical context and aftermath of a concert that never happened. In 2009 Leonard Cohen was scheduled to perform in Israel. Because of increasing pressure from pro-Palestinian voices to dissuade Cohen from performing in Israel, a twin event in Palestine was organized. Amid protests and claims that the latter concert was a token show of solidarity and a hollow attempt to appease demonstrators, the concert was boycotted and eventually canceled. But the story, as Rakowitz's work demonstrates, did not end there. Conjoining the cultural histories of Palestine and Israel with the ethical dilemmas faced by performers under the conditions of a boycott, this volume, the first in the Research/Practice series, brings to light the research that went into this multifaceted work and plots the future arc of its trajectory.

To circumvent is to get around the rules, to find loopholes, to initiate idiosyncratic solutions, to employ subtle metaphor to highlight problematic situations. Michael Rakowitz does just that, combining architecture, design, agitational techniques and a poetic sensibility to create installations and performances that touch on issues of power, visibility and memory. His paraSITe shelters are custom-built tents for homeless people that attach to the hot exhaust vents of buildings, creating not only a heated abode but one much more visible than a cardboard box. Rise conducts the smell of Chinese pastries from a Chinatown bakery to the decidedly un-local art exhibition in an adjacent building. And in Minaret, Rakowitz uses an alarm clock bought in Jordan to broadcast the adhan, the Muslim call to prayer, to a city where minarets are otherwise quieted.

Published for a major touring exhibition, this substantial catalogue documents a brand new commission and six major works from the career of Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz, known for his 2018 sculpture for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. Sculptor, detective, stone carver and sometime chef, Michael Rakowitz (b.1973) takes his cue from the histories of buildings and objects, creating enthralling environments informed by the aspirations of utopian architecture and the disasters of modernity. Drawing on locations ranging from his hometown of Chicago to the Bamiyan province of Afghanistan, he is a consummate storyteller, revealing what built structures and artefacts tell us about suppressed histories while retrieving lost cultures through Middle Eastern cooking, wry humour and community building. Works documented here include The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist (2007), an intricate narrative of sculptures and drawings about artefacts stolen from the National Musuem of Iraq in Baghdad, in the aftermath of the 2003 US invasion - the largest of which, a gigantic elephant which once guarded the gates of Nineveh, has been recreated for Trafalgar Square's current Fourth Plinth; White Man Got No Dreaming (2008) which documents a vision to rebuild Tatlin's Tower in Sydney's contested Aboriginal neighbourhood The Block, aligning two different cultures with their shared view of time and progress; and The Breakup (2010), an ode to the rise and fall of The Beatles, inspired by their last concert in Jerusalem and presenting a clear allegory for the fragmentation of Middle Eastern culture and relations. The fully illustrated catalogue will feature a new interview with the artist as well as writing on each work with voices from the Middle East, Australia, Europe and America.

On a sculptural recreation of a room from an ancient Iraqi palace, in the wake of lootings by Western archaeologists and ISIS Using Arab-language newspapers and wrappers from food products imported from the Middle East, Iraqi American artist Michael Rakowitz (born 1973) has recreated to scale Room H from the Northwest Palace of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud (Kalhu). Part of a reception suite, Room H was originally lined with seven-foot-tall carved stone reliefs, including an inscription detailing Ashurnasirpal II's achievements and winged male figures, many of which have been removed by Western archaeologists over the last 150 years. Here, Rakowitz has "reappeared" only those panels that were in situ in Room H when the remains of the palace were destroyed by the jihadist group the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2015. Areas from which the reliefs had already been removed by 19th-century archaeologists are left blank, resulting in what Rakowitz calls "a palimpsest of different moments of removal."
