Le travail social participe centralement à l’évolution de nos sociétés contemporaines, tant du point de vue de sa contribution au problème de la vulnérabilité, de la proximité qu’il entretient avec la population, du dialogue qu’il nourrit avec d’autres champs que par les critiques qu’il suscite. De cet aspect polymorphe découle l’intérêt de le considérer, pour reprendre une expression de Nietzsche, « avec le plus grand nombre d’yeux possible ». C’est dans une telle perspective que Thierry Gutknecht se propose de rendre compte de la complexité du travail social en empruntant au philosophe Michel Foucault certains concepts clefs — pouvoir, savoir, dispositif, gouvernementalité, etc. — ainsi que sa démarche de problématisation. Il s’agit alors de « partir du bas », c’est-à-dire de la pratique et de textes de base (lois, référentiels, actes de journées thématiques, etc.) afin d’aborder certains aspects de ce champ en les posant comme problèmes demandant à être pensés d’un point de vue global. Au final, le travailleur social se retrouve interpellé quant à la centralité d’une interrogation sur le devenir de la Cité ; autrement dit, se pose la question du positionnement, non seulement éthique mais aussi politique et sociétal, du professionnel.
