In chaos theory, the butterfly effect refers to the sensitive dependence on initial conditions, where minimal changes in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can lead to large differences in a later stage. Beyond the climate sciences, the concept of the domino effect is similarly used as a broader term for any situation in which a relatively minor change is expected to cause significant black swan events.
