The request to organize under its patronage at Poitiers in 1998 a Symposium entitled “Advanced Optical Methods and Applications in Solid Mechanics” by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (I.U.T.A.M.) was well received for the following two reasons. First, for nearly 20 years no Symposium devoted to optical methods in solids had been organized. Second, recent advances in digital image processing provided many new applications which are described in the following. We have the honour to present here the proceedings of this Symposium. st th The Symposium took place from august 31 to September 4 at the Institut International de la Prospective in Futuroscope near Poitiers. A significant number of internationally renowned specialists had expressed their wish to participate in this meeting. The Scientific Committee proposed 16 general conferences and selected 33 regular lectures and 17 poster presentations. Papers corresponding to posters are not differentiated in the proceedings from those that were presented orally. It is worth noting that a total of 80 participants, representing 16 countries, registered for this symposium.. The Scientific Committee deserves praise for attracting a significant number of young scientists, both as authors and as participants. Let us add our warm acknowledgements to Professor J.W. We present a solution for one of the main limitations in classical interferometry and fringe projection, which is the dynamic range limitation. The technique is based on real time inverse fringe projection to enhance the dynamic range and increase the vertical resolution without the need of prior information about the test object or the system parameters. The object's form optical path difference map is first measured, and then used to generate inverse fringes to optically filter the low spatial frequency form. The surface finish can then be measured without the impact of the form. A stereo microscope-based fringe projection system was designed, constructed, and used to illustrate the technique. The system was also used to characterize solder bumps with an uncertainty of approximately 10%. Individual solder bumps were also characterized using Zygo's NewVieW[superscript]TM scanning white light interferometer (SWLI) and the results were compared to measurements on Intel's bump metrology tool. The results show that the SWLI has the lowest uncertainty and maximum repeatability but the lowest measurement speed. Intel's tool has a repeatability of approximately 1% and a measurement speed of about 10 minutes per 100,000 bumps, making it suitable for high volume process control.

Moiré fringe projection techniques are gaining popularity due to their non-contact nature and high accuracy in measuring the surface shape of many objects. All such instruments use phase algorithms to reconstruct the surface, with the accuracy dependent on many factors. In an effort to better understand the limitations of moiré fringe projection techniques, a detailed uncertainty analysis is investigated on a constructed moiré fringe projection system for static objects. In addition, a calibration process is presented which produces an equivalent wavelength map, which takes into account the variation of the equivalent wavelength over the field of view for a divergent system. This includes the use of a calibration artifact to check the calibration process for a detailed analysis of the systematic biases. Lastly, the moiré fringe projection system was adapted to measure the vibrational amplitude of a thin-walled part while it was being machined. The system utilizes an inexpensive super-bright LED as a light source, which allows the system to strobe a dynamic object to measure the surface shape at an arbitrary phase of the vibration cycle.
