Microbes were the first forms of life on this planet and have survived by adapting to ever-changing environments, from simple one-celled life forms to intelligent, decision-making, life-sustaining species in charge of many primary functions in Earths biochemical and biological balances. The scientific community estimates that life began approximately 3.5 billion years ago as a result of a complex sequence of chemical reactions that took place in Earths atmosphere. There was virtually no oxygen, and these first microorganisms were surviving by eating naturally occurring foods. Gradual changes to these earliest cells resulted in new life forms that were no longer dependent on the same food supply as their ancestors; they were able to feed themselves by using the energy of the sun. Without the activity of these early organisms, Earths atmosphere would still be without oxygen and the evolution of oxygen-dependent animals, including humans, would have never occurred. Microorganisms are found in every environment, from the deepest sea to the highest mountains and from the deserts to the poles. Microbes are in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. They are also found in the soil, plants, animals , and the human body. The number of bacteria living within the human body of the average human adult is estimated to outnumber human cells ten to one and is found mostly on our skin, the respiratory tract, the digestive system, and the oral cavity. Microbes control every aspect of our lives Exposure to bacteria and/or viruses and our interaction with these invaders will largely depend on the health of our internal environment and our mental/emotional state. In order to understand how changes in bacterial populations affect us, we must consider lifestyle, nutrition, personal hygiene, exposure to stress, pollution, and the environment. Many single organisms exhibit intelligence of a kind not seen in other species of the animal or plant kingdom. They neither have nervous systems nor brains but harbor an internal system that can be equated to a biological computer. To solve newly encountered problems, they assess the situation, recall stored data of past experiences, and then execute information processing, transforming the colony into a super brain. Bacteria do not just react to change in their surroundings; they anticipate and prepare for it. They are not simple solitary organisms. They are highly social and evolved creatures. They congregate to fend off enemies, meet challenges of nature to reproduce, obtain food, and maintain their critical environment. Some bacterial intelligence, if compared to human levels, is 60 points higher than the human average of an IQ of 100. Microbes can keep us healthy and fend off invaders or make us very ill and may kill us under the right circumstances. We must provide a healthy environment for our resident bacteria to flourish and to help us maintain physical, mental, and emotional health. Regenerating our individual bioterrain means forming alliances, not antagonisms, with the microbial community.

From the remarkable minds of Sputnik Futures, this visually engaging exploration of the microbes that surround us and how these unseen powerhouses are shaping our future is perfect for readers of I Contain Multitudes and 10% Human. Let’s face it, microbes rule the world! Bacteria, fungi, archaea, protozoa, algae, even viruses—these microorganisms may go unseen, but the impact they have on our lives is unmistakable. From panspermia (the bacteria dust from our galaxy) and the microbiomes of our homes and our environments, to emerging research on microbes’ role in our social emotions of love and empathy, and the realization that we are a superorganism, made up of trillions of bacteria that may be what makes us “human,” the authors take you through a fascinating revelation of how microbial populations play a crucial role in every aspect of our life. Breakthroughs in our understanding of microbes are shaping the frontier of medicine and health, technology, environmentalism, wellness, architecture, and more. Microbes are talking to us, and we are learning to speak to them in turn. For example, did you know: -That the mind and the gut talk to each other? -That your personality may be shaped by your microbiome? -That a lack of biodiversity can make you sick? -That microbes can reverse climate change and reduce plastic waste? -That our first microbes came from the universe, and we are taking our microorganisms back to space? In Thriving with Microbes, the brilliant minds of Sputnik Futures reveal cutting-edge discoveries from biologists, doctors, ecologists, technologists, and thought leaders as they explore the vast network of microorganisms around and within us. With expert voices, bold discoveries, and engaging visuals, this captivating addition to the Alice in Futureland® series is a must-read guide to the vibrant microbial world we inhabit, how it is shaping our individuality, and the miraculous future these microorganisms are showing us.

A great deal of what is known about genetics and inheritance is thanks to what has been learned by studying microbes. Supporting the Next Generation Science Standards on heredity and inheritance of traits as well as the structures and processes of simple and complex organisms, this book introduces all of the various types of microbes found on Earth, and in and on human bodies: bacteria, archaea, and protists. Through engaging language that simplifies complicated science concepts into easily digestible pieces of information and detailed images and diagrams, students will learn about the discovery, evolutionary history, and roles of microbes in health, disease, and the functioning of our planet. Sidebars provide students with additional information to help them gain a deeper understanding of the diversity of life.

Small Wonders written by Idan Ben-Barak and has been published by Scribe Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-01 with Science categories.

In the spirit of Natalie Angier’s The Canon, and writing with the verve and wit of Bill Bryson, Small Wonders takes the reader on a fantastic voyage to the microscopic, but massively influential, world of microbiology. It’s a strange and dangerous world where oxygen is a lethal poison, sulphur is a delicious treat, deception is a basic survival skill, and perfectly good alcohol is simply thrown away. Idan Ben-Barak wears his learning lightly as he introduces us to the amazing lives and workings of genes and proteins, bacteria, and viruses, and the myriad ways in which they interact to shape life on Earth. On the journey, we learn about the teamwork required to rot human teeth; the microbe superheroes who feed on radioactive waste; suicide genes; the origins of diseases and antibiotic resistance; and the numerous respects in which microbes benefit human life — from manufacturing food and medicine, to mining gold, finding oil, cleaning up the mess we make, and generally rendering the Earth habitable. Small Wonders is popular science at its best. Ben-Barak’s love of bugs is infectious and makes for a scintillating, fast-moving adventure that will appeal to even the least scientifically savvy of readers.

Welcome To The Microbiome written by Rob DeSalle and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-10 with Science categories.

Suddenly, research findings require a paradigm shift in our view of the microbial world. The Human Microbiome Project at the National Institutes of Health is well under way, and unprecedented scientific technology now allows the censusing of trillions of microbes inside and on our bodies as well as in the places where we live, work, and play. This intriguing, up-to-the-minute book for scientists and nonscientists alike explains what researchers are discovering about the microbe world and what the implications are for modern science and medicine. Rob DeSalle and Susan Perkins illuminate the long, intertwined evolution of humans and microbes. They discuss how novel DNA sequencing has shed entirely new light on the complexity of microbe-human interactions, and they examine the potential benefits to human health: amazing possibilities for pinpoint treatment of infections and other illnesses without upsetting the vital balance of an individual microbiome. This book has been inspired by an exhibition, The Secret World Inside You: The Microbiome, at the American Museum of Natural History, which will open in New York in early November 2015 and run until August 2016. It will then travel to other museums in the United States and abroad.
