Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) have been recognized as a major contemporary source of employment and income in a growing number of developing countries. Yet, relatively little is known about the characteristics and patterns of change in these enterprises. This volume examines the dynamics of MSEs in the development process. Drawing on a unique set of surveys conducted in twelve countries in Africa and Latin America the authors map the patterns of change in MSEs in the developing world. Subjects covered include: * significance of new start and closure rates of MSEs * factors involved in expansion rates and growth patterns of MSEs * the role of gender in MSEs evolution.

Microenterprises play an important role in sub Saharan Africa. They account for a sizeable portion of the economy, by providing employment and a means of livelihood for much of the nonagricultural population. This paper is the result of a survey of the literature and extensive discussions with practicioners and its primary focus is a direct approach in support of microenterprises. Perhaps the simplest objective to pursue is access to credit. The main lesson from experimentation in this field is that the poor are bankable and and can be served relatively inexpensively, provided nontraditional lending methods are utilized (e.g. group lending). Technical assistance and support services can also be provided to help first-time entrepreneurs set up their own businesses, to assist microenterprises in their daily business, or to help them graduate to a larger size. The task of assisting microenterprises requires small, flexible, and responsive organizations, with sufficient autonomy to make ad hoc decisions, yet with adequate coordination at the national level. Such organizations include PVOs, NGOs, cooperatives, banks, business associations, churches and women's groups. The report recommends that capacity building be incorporated as a specific objective of microenterprise support programs and should be budgeted for. Shifting the focus of assistance from beneficiaries to support institutions is an effective way of reaching the most marginal groups.

Project Report from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 1,0, Quest University Canada, language: English, abstract: Our study, despite general doubts, aims to deliver answers to how exactly growth of microenterprises is possible. Our proposed experiment combines different aspects of recent studies that found positive effects on growth. We thus want to set our study in the context of a larger, new strategy in development economics, proposed by Banerjee and Duflo in “Poor Economics”: “the accumulation of a set of small steps, each well thought out, carefully tested, and judiciously implemented”. Through a global economic perspective, it is striking that some countries are very rich and some countries are very poor. In order for poor countries to catch up, their economies have to grow. This growth can be generated through foreign companies in developing countries or firms run by local elites. However, these comprise the dangers of profits not staying in the country and of strengthening corrupt of oppressing elites. An alternative way lies in the generation of growth of very small enterprises. The incomes they generate are more likely to reach the poorer part of the population (e.g. by creating employment) or to be reinvested generating further growth than when money flows to local elites or abroad. We thus see the generation of growth for microenterprises as crucial in terms of the economic development and alleviation of poverty in poor countries. However, we agree with Easterly, that it is wrong to ask “the question of what the end of poverty requires” (Easterly, 2006, p. 11). Instead, it is important to look at more concrete problems and find ways to solve them. We see growth of microenterprises as one of such problems, as it is inhibited by a number of constraints. Some researchers even raise “doubts that microenterprises can generate general economic growth” (Fiala, 2013). Even the young, widely implemented phenomenon of microfinance has not changed much in terms of growth. In Poor Economics, Banerjee and Duflo write about microfinance: “”We cannot count on it to be a stepping-stone for larger business to be created”, and that this would be “the next big challenge for finance in developing countries” (Banerjee & Duflo, 2012).

Bootstrap Capital written by Lisa J. Servon and has been published by Brookings Institution Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-01 with Business & Economics categories.

The microenterprise strategy—helping people start small businesses—has generated attention among policymakers and the media as a way to create jobs and help lift people out of poverty. Through extensive interviews and case studies of five diverse microenterprise programs in different U.S. regions, Lisa J. Servon examines the potential and limits of these programs. In the late 1980s, the microenterprise strategy came to the United States from less-developed countries such as Bangladesh, where the Grameen Bank flourishes. Since then over 200 programs have opened their doors in nearly every state. This book identifies the current discourse on microenterprises, discusses how this approach represents a departure from traditional economic development and social welfare strategies, and examines the wide range of results. Boot strap Capital tells the story of both the programs and the people who use them. One program, Women's Initiative, targets very low income women in the San Francisco Bay Area and requires all clients to undergo three months of training before they can apply for a loan. Some of the participants are true entrepreneurs; others pursue self-employment because the mainstream economy has failed them. Servon finds that microenterprise programs combat the problem of persistent poverty by serving a broad socioeconomic group and by focusing on the goals of empowerment, economic literacy, and community organization. She shows that microenterprise programs do more to help those who exist at the margins of the mainstream economy than those who are completely cut off from it. She calls for a rethinking of expectations for this strategy, based on the experience of programs and entrepreneurs in this country. This book provides the basis for reframing policy support for these programs.
