(Micro)preface Writing the first words of the first published book of a young man of great talent is a heavy responsibility. In his Microscopic Twists, Cornéliu Tocan has managed to chisel the end of a feather from which only flows the ink necessary to offer us this amazing series of microstories. The word economy, the time economy and the space economy meet the richness of the images, that of the vocabulary and that of the effect of surprise. I have repeatedly paraphrased St-Exupery: perfection is not achieved when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing more to remove. It would be foolish to think that Twitter would be the perfected Proust, because it would miss the style, inherent in any literature. Cornéliu, on the other hand, did literature. His style is there, the narrative common thread is solid, and it weaves before our eyes. The unexpected is born in the meandering of its twists, where drunkenness, derision, audacity, sensuality or delirium mingle. At 16, I discovered the fifty-one short stories of Dino Buzzati in Il colombre. At the age of 16, also, Cornéliu Tocan makes me to discover his fifty microstories. From then on, twenty-five years passed. Same emotion, in fewer words. Style exercise? Probably, yes. Who has never started by writing a word can only know what it costs to write a book? Didactic exercise? I do not believe: Cornéliu has already imposed himself as much by substance as by form and he still imposes by the tenacity to bring this project to fruition by offering it to us. By sharing here the fruits of his exercises, Cornéliu galvanizes our desire to read, to stay ahead of his texts, to always have a little more. But it is only at the beginnings of something more important, and I would ask you to insist that he offer us many more. Nicolas F. Paquin UNEQ Member Quebec Union of Writers

“The most original authors are not so because they advance what is new, but because they put what they have to say as if it had never been said before.“ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Preface for Russian-Speaking Readers Discovering a new e-book with such an intriguing name, practically every Russian-speaking reader animated by intellectual curiosity will start flipping through it, puzzled by the term twists and wondering about their microscopic feature. And this is not surprising, because, as a literary technique, the twist is little known to the Russian-speaking public. So, what is the twist and namely the literary one? The "twist" is an unexpected turn of the story that dramatically changes the very perception of what is happening. Most often, the twists are used in the film scripts, as the so-called "shifters". In such movies, the director and screenwriter play with the viewer's perception. The unforeseen ending completely changes the whole meaning of the narrative plot. A more intense twist effect is obtained when, after the reading of the story, one is suddenly overtaken by an insight about a particular detail, which before the outcome did not make any sense. Let's call it a kind of "twist aftertaste". The young and talented Canadian writer Cornéliu Tocan created a collection of 50 short twists filled with deep meaning and making the reader think about each story separately. Reading this book for the first time, I suddenly realized that to understand each twist, I need to read it two or more times. In the case of some of these stories, the epiphany came to me a few days later. All these aspects are an indication of how masterfully the author has thought through each story, using unusual literary techniques. Understanding each story, we live a small life, experiencing a "slight shock" from what we read. This feeling can be quite "hard" for some twists, where the writer touches on topics of concern to society and sometimes shocks us with the finale. Many stories contain references to Greek mythology, philosophy, universal literature, science, and history, which will require readers some cultural background knowledge in order to fully understand the meaning. All this makes Cornéliu Tocan’s book a unique and innovative performance in the literary art. His work can be compared with the flash fiction of Linor Goralik, a Russian writer and poetess who has published a number of stories in the genre of small prose. But, unlike L. Goralik, Cornéliu Tocan drastically downscales the number of characters and observes it with rigor, as well as uses the literary technique of the "twist", for the all 50 microstories. That justifies the epithet "microscopic" for his miniatures in prose, making them unique in its own way. Having read this collection in one breath, you will get not only a great pleasure, but also the ground for reflection and discussion of these original stories with your friends. Tested on personal experience! Diana Ismagilova Master of Arts (M.A.) in Philology

Without Redemption, using documents from variety of sources, including Bonin’s own writings, brings the reader into the back and forth with witnesses, lawyers, media, jailhouse snitches, friends, friends, family, inmates at Los Angeles Men’s Central Jail and Bonin’s co-murderers. The book was written on a number of parallel tracks that constantly intersect: First, it is the most detailed historical biography ever written about Bill Bonin, the notorious Freeway Killer responsible for murdering 22 teenage boys over ten-months in 1979-80. Second, it is a psychological roadmap which charts the evolution of Bonin’s personality from abused child to sexual predator to serial killer. This is accomplished using documents from his childhood, war service, multiple California government mental health and penal institutions, witness testimony and the expertise of Clinical Psychologist Vonda Pelto, Ph.D., who had many sessions with Bonin and two of his accomplices while working in Los Angeles Men’s Central Jail. Third, it is a narrative which, using long hidden documents, reveals the inner workings of Bonin’s mind, showing how he thought, felt, planned and viewed the world. The narrative displays Bonin, an abused high school dropout, cleverly manipulating lawyers, judges, doctors, social workers, friends, family, probation officers, government bureaucrats, detectives, journalists and, most tragically, the innocent victims of his rage. Fourth, Without Redemption reveals the complex story of what happened after Bonin’s final arrest, when so much was in flux and so many moving parts were swirling about. Archived investigative documents, collected from a variety of sources, brings to light a number of surprising, shocking, sad and even funny events from those ten tumultuous months from June 1980 to March 1981. Finally, it is a book which solves two 40-year-old murder mysteries and unlocks how one day of crossroads and coincidences, in the midst of the murder spree, profoundly impacted many lives and future events.
