Microstructural Characterization of Radiation Effects in Nuclear Materials provides an overview into experimental techniques that can be used to examine those effects (both neutron and charged particle) and can be used by researchers, technicians or students as a tool to introduce them to the various techniques. The need to examine the effect of radiation on materials is becoming increasingly important as nuclear energy is emerging as a growing source of renewable energy. The book opens with a discussion of why it is important to study the effects of radiation on materials and looks at current and future reactor designs and the various constraints faced by materials as a result of those designs. The book also includes an overview of the radiation damage mechanisms. The next section explores the various methods for characterizing damage including transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, analytical electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, atom probe tomography, X-ray scattering techniques and ion beam analysis techniques. Lastly, a brief introduction into modelling radiation effects in materials, and the synergy of experiments and modelling to provide an atomic-scale to macro-scale understanding of damage processes is included. Focuses on structural analysis techniques, describing their instrumentation, and introduces specific case studies showcasing the techniques Covers the fundamental aspects of TEM as well as the specific aspects of radiation damage Discusses the characterization of real materials systems that have been neutron irradiated Encompasses sample preparation and statistical analysis into the individual technique chapters Written by well-known experts in the field of materials characterization

This thesis investigates the behavior of two candidate materials (a-SiO2 and MgO) for applications in fusion (e.g., the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ITER) and Generation IV fission reactors. Both parts of the thesis – the development of the ionoluminescence technique and the study of the ion-irradiation effects on both materials – are highly relevant for the fields of the ion-beam analysis techniques and irradiation damage in materials. The research presented determines the microstructural changes at different length scales in these materials under ion irradiation. In particular, it studies the effect of the irradiation temperature using several advanced characterization techniques. It also provides much-needed insights into the use of these materials at elevated temperatures. Further, it discusses the development of the ion-beam-induced luminescence technique in different research facilities around the globe, a powerful in situ spectroscopic characterization method that until now was little known. Thanks to its relevance, rigorosity and quality, this thesis has received twoprestigious awards in Spain and France.

Annotation Effects of Radiation on Materials: Fourteenth International Symposium was presented at Andover, MA, June 1988. The symposium was sponsored by ASTM Committee E-10 on Nuclear Technology and Applications. The papers from the first three days of the symposium appear in the two volumes of this publication. Volume I encompasses radiation damage- induced microstructures; point defect, solute, and gas atom effects; atomic-level measurement techniques; and applications of theory. Volume II includes mechanical behavior, all papers dealing with pressure-vessel steels, breeder reactor components, dosimetry, and nuclear fuels. The fourth day of the symposium was devoted to the single topic of reduced-activation materials (see TK9204). The two volumes are separately sold at $127 and $128 respectively; each is independently indexed. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Characterizing Property And Microstructure Of Ceramic Nuclear Materials With Laser Based Microscopy written by Yuzhou Wang and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Nuclear reactors categories.

Ceramic nuclear materials are crucial for the structural integrity and healthy functioning of a nuclear reactor. Especially for nuclear fuels, they need to withstand extremely high temperature, high irradiation dose, and drastic structural transformation. Many mechanisms contribute to the material degradation, including defect accumulation, pellet-cladding interaction, and thermal shocks. Characterizing the properties and microstructure is not only important to improve fuel efficiency, but is also helpful to enhance the tolerance and stability in the rough environment. There are special requirements with respect to the measurement on nuclear materials, thus many techniques, though have been widely accepted in some other areas, are excluded. Since nuclear materials are oftentimes radioactive, non-contact measurement with the help of optics or acoustics are desirable to minimize the exposure as well as radioactive wastes. In addition, the property in an irradiated sample is usually spatially inhomogeneous, and the sample is usually small and irregular in size due to the limits of in-pile experiment. The techniques should have good spatial resolution down to micrometers and should be able to resolve anisotropic properties. Laser-based microscopy is a perfect candidate for the characterization of nuclear materials with all the above merits. Here in this study results of several measurement are presented to show its potential. By recording the reflectance change after the absorption of laser pulse, the anisotropic thermal conductivity of a thin pyrolytic carbon coating was measured. Apart from this, the interface thermal resistance between the coating and kernel was analyzed. The result is essential for the modelling of temperature profile in nuclear fuel particles. By monitoring the scattering of laser beam by acoustic waves, subsurface grain boundary in a polycrystalline cerium oxide sample was reconstructed in 3D by time-domain Brillouin scattering (TDBS). This non-destructive method can provide new opportunities in the investigation of in situ effects and detailed characterization of grain microstructure. Lastly, the evolution of acoustic amplitude with respect to optical polarization during TDBS was investigated. This interesting phenomenon is discovered to relate to the photoelastic anisotropy and can expand the sensitivity of TDBS to lateral dimensions. From this result and an optoacoustic model, the probe optical polarization where detected shear acoustic amplitude is strong/weak is predicted, and the determination of third Euler angle is demonstrated.
