Simultaneous measurements have been made of electric field and acoustic flux distributions in propagating domains in CdS crystals. Electric field measurements used a standard probe, while acoustic intensity measurements were made with a laser probe utilizing Brillouin scattering. Acoustic frequencies in the range between approximately 2.5 GhZ and approximately 0.3 GhZ could be covered. It was found that substantial acoustic flux exists at frequencies far below the maximum small-signal gain frequency, and that there were substantial differences in the spatial distributions of electric and acoustic fields. Measurements are continuing to cover wider parameter ranges. Microwave two-port fixed acoustic delay lines have been developed for use in calibration of STC C-band FM radio altimeters. Acoustic delay lines are very well suited to this application, as delay, bandwidth, and insertion loss requirements are well within the range of such delay lines. Scaling of these delay lines for X-band radar application is being undertaken. (Author).

The final report describes device research in both linear and nonlinear acoustic devices for signal processing. Wideband, monolithic surface-acoustic-wave convolvers have been developed, based on nonlinear interaction between surface acoustic waves and conduction electrons in zinc oxide film on sapphire structures, achieving new ranges of conversion efficiency. A high speed 8-bit analog-to-digital converter has been developed, using a heretofore unused property of linear surface acoustic wave delay lines, which has potential for multichannel parallel processing with large data throughput.
