Relative gain and resolution measurements of a microwave antenna in a partially coherent field were made. The degree of coherence function for a rectangular aperture incoherent source was also measured. A resonant longitudinal slot array antenna with a center frequency of 2.8 GHz was constructed. The partial coherent microwave field was generated by an incoherent source which consisted of a planar array of commercial fluorescent lamps. A tuned radio frequency (TRF) radiometer was used in conjunction with a lock-in amplifier as a synchronous detection system. The experimentally measured degree of coherence function agreed well with theory. The results of the antenna measurements indicated that only a limited improvement in gain and resolution could be obtained by increasing the aperture dimensions for an antenna in a field of a known degree of partial coherence.
