Microwave and spectroscopic analyses of high density pulsed afterglows in argon, helium and hydrogen have been carried out. Results in the rare gases supported the theoretical prediction of collisional radiative recombination as a major electron removal process especially at high densities, and were particularly interesting in argon as little detailed information was previously available in this gas. The atomic to molecular ion conversion mechanism was also studied in argon. The possibility of negative ion formation in hydrogen was examined at low pressures, whereas at pressures above 1 torr the existence of complex molecular hydrogen ions was inferred. The locations of the Tonks-Dattner resonances in current-modulated cylindrical plasmas (positive columns) using microwave absorption were shown to depend on whether the increasing or decreasing half-cycle was under observation. A similar effect was noted when the more fundamental parameter, electron density, measured with a microwave cavity, was used to monitor the resonant spectra. (Author).

Major physical mechanisms associated with the formation of the ionized region are studied in detail. The main part of the author's research is devoted to problems associated with the breakdown mechanisms for radio frequency discharges in air. A special chapter deals with breakdown in intersecting pulsed beams and the effects of recombination, diffusion and atmospheric winds on the stability of the structure.
