Microwave breakdown theory is extrapolated to the 6943 Angstroms, ruby laser wavelength. The need for breakdown criterion other than that for the critical plasma frequency, sometimes used in microwave breakdown, is shown. A suitable criterion is developed from the solution of the electron density continuity equation, including recombination loss. A solution for the breakdown electric field strength, or power density, for the pulsed ruby laser in air as a function of pressure is obtained. The effect of varying pulse duration, initial electron density, and characteristic diffusion length is shown. A minimum power density of 10 to the 12th power watts/sq. cm is predicted for breakdown of air by ruby laser radiation. The extent of accuracy of the results of extrapolating microwave breakdown theory to optical laser breakdown is discussed; and there is speculation on the possibility of additional effects peculiar to laser breakdown. Possible mechanisms responsible for laser-induced breakdown in super-high pressure gases are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that the breakdown mechanism involves energy gain of free electrons by acceleration in the incident electromagnetic field while undergoing collisions with neutrals, and subsequent electron-impact ionization. This mechanism is described by classical microwave breakdown theory and favorably compares with the experimental measurements. Experimental breakdown threshold data in He, Ar, H2, and N2 was obtained over the pressure range 100-30,000 psi. Plasmas are produced in He, Ar, H2, and N2 over the pressure range 100-30,000 psi. The radiation from a giant-pulse ruby laser is focused within a pressure cell having three quartz windows and capable of withstanding 60,000 psi. Breakdown threshold data is taken for comparison with theory. Kerr cell photographs of the focal region provide time resolution of the macroscopic growth of the plasma. Two possible mechanisms are evaluated: multiquantum absorption and electron-impact ionization. The latter is analyzed both quantum mechanically by the inverse Bremsstrahlung theory and classically by microwave theory.

Although microwaves and coherent optics, being two of the largest and most useful branches of electrical engineering to emerge technologically, are usually considered as distinct subjects, many of the underlying fundamental principles, scientific achievements, and practical applications have common features. Following the evolvment of the initial principles and techniques during the closing decade of the last century, microwave engineering has long matured to a stage of ready availability of components, automation and accuracy of measurement, economical manufacturing methods, and application of sophisticated systems. Further, this development of electromagnetic phenomena having spatial and temporal coherence has, based on several centuries of study and practice of noncoherent light, in the last two decades reached the optical region. Hence, it is now practicable to consider a comprehensive treatment of these two fields, division being made by subject matter rather than by the artificial distinctions of frequency and/or wavelength ranges. However, a full text on the combined subjects would be very large and unwieldy and, thus, this Bibliography is presented in the hope that it will prove useful as a compact reference source to a large body of workers and, by putting forward the latest scientific and technical advances, stimulate a multi-disciplinary approach. The material of the book commences with the fundamentals of radiation and matter, progressing through components and devices, amplification and generation, transmission, reception and processing of information, and methods of measurement to conclude with a wide range of applications.

Propagation Of High Power Laser Radiation In Partially Ionized Gases written by Robert J. Papa and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1974 with Electron distribution categories.

When a laser beam of sufficiently high intensity interacts with a weakly ionized gas, the nonuniform deposition of laser energy into the electron gas causes heating of the electrons, ions, and neutral gas. Eventually, the neutral gas will 'break-down' and become more highly ionized. This ionization can seriously limit the amount of laser energy that can damage a target. A multifluid model has been devised to describe the many physical processes that occur when the high power laser wave interacts with the partially ionized gas. A flexible computer program has been developed to numerically integrate the multifluid plasma transport equations coupled with Maxwell's equations. The computer program is sufficiently general so as to be capable of describing target vaporization, with diffusion and ionization of target material into an ambient gas. In this report, only the modification of an ambient gas by the laser radiation is studied.

This book was written by a group of authors and provides a systematic dis cussion of questions related to bremsstrahlung in many-particle systems. A number of new results have recently been obtained in this area which require a fundamental revision of the previously existing traditional concepts of bremsstrahlung. This ap plies both to complicated atoms containing a large number of electrons and to the additional bremsstrahlung in a system of many particles forming a medium. In fact, the traditional approach was rigorously applicable only either to isolated "structureless" particles (e. g. , to the emission of an electron on a proton) or to par ticles radiating in the limit of extremely high frequencies. Polarization effects (either polarization of an atom itself by an incident particle or polarization of the medium surrounding an atomic particle) have a significant effect in the practically important optical and x-ray frequency ranges and sometimes even predominate. The first effect has come to be known as polarization atomic (or dynamic) bremsstrahlung and the second, as polarization transition bremsstrahlung. The au thors of this book use a single term: polarization bremsstrahlung. It seems that, in contrast to earlier ideas on the subject, bremsstrahlung during collisions of heavy incident particles with atoms is by no means small and is entirely caused by polar ization effects.
