During a five-year stretch in the middle of the decade, the James Madison Dukes emerged as one of the elite programs in FCS football. Behind a confident coach and an established recruiting pipeline, the Dukes steamrolled their way to four playoff appearances, one national championship and a 49-15 record from 2004-2008. The origins of this run, however, began much earlier — in critical moments and decisions made during a long rebuilding effort. Madison football had most recently been marked by poor attendance, young players, mediocrity and tragedy when the 2004 season opened. And yet there also existed a foundation of camaraderie, purpose and talent — the building blocks of a successful program. As the ’04 season got underway, the backdrop of an embattled coach, a quarterback controversy and a family in pain gave way to thrilling plays, comeback victories, and a historic run that changed the future of the program. In Midnight in Chattanooga, James Irwin examines the disparity between the pre- and post-championship landscapes of JMU football, giving readers an exclusive look at the pivotal season — and game — that catapulted the Dukes to the upper levels of the FCS arms race. Fortunate to cover the Dukes throughout the 2004 season, Irwin weaves through a powerful story of a group of men on the doorstep of their first championship, the friendships they developed, the tragedies they overcame, and the community that embraced them.

The vast majority of the law enforcement officers in this country perform their very difficult jobs with respect for their communities and in compliance with the law. Even so, there have been incidents in which this was not the case. Police brutality and misconduct has been under the microscope for the last several years, and Loretta Prater brings these issues to light through research reports and numerous examples of cases, including the personal case of her son. On January 2, 2004, Leslie Vaughn Prater, Loretta Prater’s unarmed son, was a homicide victim in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His death resulted from an altercation with four police officers. Excessive Use of Force: One Mother's Struggle Against Police Brutality and Misconduct is the account of an African American family’s personal experience with police brutality and misconduct, the behind the scene dynamics, as well as the personal emotional trauma experienced by victims’ families. While written from the perspective of a mother, Prater brings a good balance of personal and outside information. She allows the reader to see inside her story but successfully includes secondary analysis of research and related stories of others who have experienced similar situations resulting from police officer misconduct. Excessive Use of Force engages the reader in this serious and important topic of police brutality and misconduct.

The legend that was Robert Sparks Walker began in a log cabin outside Chattanooga called Spring Frog Cabin, a humble abode built by a Cherokee naturalist in 1750. Walker would continue in the footsteps of that Cherokee to become synonymous both with Chattanooga and nature, penning thousands of articles, poems and books as a naturalist. Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, Walker gained international fame for his work, yet his largest impact remains in his native Tennessee. He helped to found the Chattanooga Audubon Society, including preserving his childhood home through Audubon Acres. Walker is remembered throughout the state for his nationally syndicated nature column, and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Environmental Stewardship is given in his name. His life was one of adventure, reflection and a deep devotion to the understanding and preservation of nature. Local author Alexandra Walker Clark, granddaughter of Robert Sparks Walker, celebrates the life of this Scenic City pioneer.

"The Ohio Basin is second in size of the six great natural divisions of the Mississippi Basin, yet it ranks first in importance in the causation of damaging floods in the larger stream. The topography of the basin in the western and northern portions is generally flat and rolling, but between those portions and the eastern and southern boundaries of the basin almost all conditions of surface contour may be found. It should be remembered that the eastern and southern boundaries, for the most part, lie along the crests of the Alleghenies and related mountain ranges, and that down the ragged western slopes of these mountains flow the streams which form the southern tributaries of such rivers as the Monongahela, the Little Kanawha, The Great Kanawha, the Big Sandy, the Kentucky, the Cumberland, and the Tennessee. On the headwaters of these rivers the slopes are steep, gradually becoming less as the lowlands are reached"--Introduction.
