Migrant workers around the world are subject to exploitative labor practices that give employers extraordinary bargaining power. This book brings together researchers, practitioners, and advocates who explore the many ways that contracted migrant workers are rendered vulnerable in the workplace. In this book, the term ‘21st-century coolie’ is deployed as a heuristic device that foregrounds the deeply unequal structures shaping the transnational flows of short-term, migrant workers. The term ‘coolie’ harkens back to the labor arrangements of earlier centuries that involved conscripted labor, indentured servitude, and contract labor across national borders. Like those of past centuries, today’s ‘coolies’ are subject to legal constraints inside and outside the employment relationship that force them into subjugated positions within the workplace.

En este panorama, se estudian estrategias de instrumentalización de los fenómenos del auge y visibilización de las migraciones en tránsito para acceder a territorios estratégicos, como ocurre en la selva del Darién, en Centroamérica; o de la producción de la fronterización de los Estados Unidos y la detención de migrantes en México, en un régimen de movilidad y producción de inmovilidad en Norteamérica. Sobre el Cono Sur y el Caribe, el trabajo aporta estudios de caso sobre la crisis migratoria venezolana, las experiencias de la nueva oleada de migrantes cubanos y la gobernanza de las migraciones como Venezuela y Brasil, en donde soberanía, nacionalismo y desarrollo aparecen como discursos excluyentes en el marco de las relaciones interestatales. Starting from the central importance of memory in contemporary societies, this book encourages a transdisciplinary reflection on how the “presentification of the past” is never a simple reenactment but corresponds to the interaction between memory and cultural sensitiveness, present beliefs and needs, expectations, and forecasts for the future. It studies cultural (re)construction through collective stories, including academic debates, media narratives, collective mobilizations, state narratives of history, architectural reconstructions, and artistic expressions. It looks at how technological innovations have profoundly changed the practices of conservation and dissemination of collective memory, with particular reference to cultural digitization. Los autores de este libro coinciden en que es importante historiar la Ciencia Política para comprender sus transformaciones, pero también consideran importante comprender sus cambios y redefiniciones a la luz de la pluralidad de los enfoques teórico-metodológicos existentes. Parten del principio de que la expresión "Ciencia Política" es empleada en sentido amplio o en sentido estricto. En el sentido amplio, la decisión denota un estudio de la historia del pensamiento político, las instituciones, las estructuras, los procesos y dinámicas políticas, el cual es integrado con rigor y sistematización sobre un riguroso examen de los hechos, expuestos con argumentos razonables y un léxico apropiado. En sentido estricto, "Ciencia Política" designa un área individualizada de estudios especializados que, siguiendo los cánones de la verdad científica, del control comparado y la comprobación empírica, ofrece una descripción del mundo político fundada en la adopción de métodos y técnicas de investigación de corte eminentemente cuantitativo. La existencia de estas dos grandes tradiciones y la forma en que se entrelazan requiere de una discusión que consideran necesaria, entre otras razones, porqué es útil para definir a la Ciencia Política contemporánea, su objeto de estudio, sus teorías y sus enfoques metodológicos.
