This book looks at the migration and work experiences of six women who have migrated to Australia from China; Zimbabwe; South Korea; the United Kingdom; India and the Philippines. It sets their journeys out into three distinct periods of migration, including the first period of their lives when they reflect on their experiences growing up with their immediate families and the factors that encouraged them to gravitate towards a nursing career. The second period covers time when each of these women begin to think about where their career in nursing might taken them. During this phase, these women take their first steps to leave their home country and migrate to Australia, often after several countries in between. The final section allows the reader to understand how these women initially experienced Australia when they first arrived and how they faced challenges both personally and professionally after arrival in their new place to call home. The discussions within these three sections cover both professional and personal/familial reflections, where differences in nursing identity between sending and destination country is discussed alongside the adjustments that the women needed to make to overcome loneliness and to successfully integrate into new organizational environments. Each chapter analyses migration as a life course, which considers why nurses leave their home country and find a new place to call home. This story takes place in a small village in Nigeria, where Ngozi was born. A lot has been documented as to the reasons behind global nurse migration—the “pull and push” factors—but for her, the decision to overcome obstacles as well as the strength and willingness to sacrifice and achieve her goals, constitute the push behind her move. This is a qualitative study about cross cultural, as well as family conflicts that affect Filipino Nurse Migrants as they immigrate to the United States to work as nurses for different institutions. To report and document the conflict narrative of Filipino Migrant Nurses in the United States from the standpoint of the Nurses themselves. The ultimate goal of this project is to build a program of conflict prevention embedded in the recruitment of Nurses from the Philippines. 12 Migrant Families, 1 official of national organizations and 1 government official participated in the completion of this project between the dates of winter of 2004 to the summer of 2006. The narratives were heard and their personal, data audio recorded in the interviews. The interviews were then transcribed and the text analyzed. The focus of this analysis is the different conditions and experiences of the families and the specific, culture consonant ways in which a Filipino Migrant Nurse copes with a new environment. The study also concentrates on the different conditions and policies that prevail amidst shortage of nurses and the recruitment of nurses in the Philippines. Research suggests that the current recruitment process has led to worker overload amidst the nursing shortage and wage abuses as new recruits wait for their immigration documents. The study traces the historical and personal conditions that led Filipino Nurses to the choice of migration. This information is also triangulated between the different members of their partners and family members. The findings suggests that although various family conflicts are commonly experienced by migrant nurses as they move to the United States, there are very few institutions, private companies and hospitals addressing adjustment issues and related conflicts. In the midst of a nursing shortage, there are significantly more elements of migration than can be addressed by the current national security centered immigration approach. Institutional coordination and sensitivity to internal and external conditions from the different private and government agencies in both the Philippines and the United States is due. But before solutions are put forward, this study examines what adjustment issues Filipino nurses encounter as they have historically immigrated to the United States. Before any price can be put on their service, it would only be prudent to examine what price they pay in the process.

This book is an attempt to penetrate the silence that surrounds the lives of nurses as migrant women. It offers a perceptive understanding of the trials faced specifically by women from the state of Kerala, in their personal and professional spheres, in the challenges posed to single women migrants as such, and the lower status ascribed to the job. In highlighting aspects of their lived experiences, it reveals how the identities of gender, class and ethnicity unmask the realities behind claims of egalitarianism and equal citizenship. Nurses from Kerala form one of the largest groups of migrant women workers in the international service sector along with Filipinos and Sri Lankans. Comparatively better salaries, work opportunities and financial independence, along with a desire to travel across the world, are often the reasons behind these migrations. For many of these women, the professional choice of nursing is usually the first step towards migration, while finding employment in Delhi, the urban capital of India, is intended as a transition point before they migrate abroad, a trajectory which may remain unrealised. In focusing on nurses who choose to work in Delhi, the author recounts how the patriarchy of the original place is recreated and relived in destination cities. In as much as traditional stigmatisation of nursing (as a ‘dirty’ profession), deeply entrenched gender prejudices, and status and role anxieties act as deterrents, these women remain undaunted in the face of adversities and treat their exposure to, and experience of, technology and nursing care in the bigger hospitals in Delhi as part of the training that is required to apply abroad. Through extensive empirical research, case studies and personal interviews, Moving with the Times illustrates nurses’ lives in Delhi, providing an account of the dynamics — between traditional patriarchy, norms and associated identities, low professional status and marginality coupled at once with the sense of personal freedom, a new career and space — that migration compels these women to negotiate. This book will appeal to scholars of sociology, gender and women’s studies, nursing and healthcare, and those interested in migration and identities.
