Eppure non esiste alcun diritto sul territorio che possa giustificare la politica sovranista del respingimento. In un’etica che guarda alla giustizia globale, Donatella Di Cesare con limpidezza concettuale e un passo a tratti narrativo riflette sul significato ultimo del migrare, dando prova anche qui di saper andare subito al cuore della questione. Abitare e migrare non si contrappongono, come vorrebbe il senso comune, ancora preda dei vecchi fantasmi dello jus sanguinis e dello jus soli. In ogni migrante si deve invece riconoscere la figura dello «straniero residente», il vero protagonista del libro. Atene, Roma, Gerusalemme sono i modelli di città esaminati, in un affresco superbo, per interrogarsi sul tema decisivo e attuale della cittadinanza. Nella nuova età dei muri, in un mondo costellato da campi di internamento per stranieri, che l’Europa pretende di tenere alle sue porte, Di Cesare sostiene una politica dell’ospitalità, fondata sulla separazione dal luogo in cui si risiede, e propone un nuovo senso del coabitare.
