But due to the Cold War and the separation of the world into East and West after the end of World War II, there were still brownfields to work on that were left behind the iron curtain. One of these brownfields was the drawing of new German borders that came along with the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR), both in 1949. Parts of the former German empire were cut off. A large amount of German citizens fled then to the west, others did not and most of them had to stay in Poland or elsewhere further east until 1989. Even more than 50 years after the end of World War II they were still considered as Germans and had therefore the right to live in the mother country. The fact, that they might have been "sovietized" in the meantime did not matter. Another group that came along with these German late settlers was the Soviet Jews. Jews from the Soviet Union were invited to come to East Germany in 1990 shortly before the German reunification and the Federal Republic then held onto this invitation in order to let discriminated and persecuted Jews as refugees into Germany. In the following paper I would like to regard the integration process of these two groups. Due to the fact that their motives to leave home and their situation in the Soviet Union was similar to each other I will regard this group mainly as one and will then focuse on the situation that awaited them in the new Germany. Integration is of critical importance to refugees displaced from their home countries and to host countries with large influxes of refugees. This actuality is especially evident in Germany, where the government introduced the Residence Rule with the August 2016 Integration Act in order to prevent residential concentrations of refugees and promote residential dispersions of these populations within the host society at the neighborhood level. Through in-depth interviews with refugees living in a collective accommodation shelter in Berlin, I learned that the informants implicitly align with the German government’s perspective on the intersections between residential locations and integration. This is evident in the refugees’ preferences for living in residential dispersions with Germans and Berliners, and convictions that residential concentrations of refugees impede this population’s integration into the host society, while residential dispersions facilitate integration. My methodological approach prioritizes the seldom-explored refugee perspectives on integration and refugee choices over residential locations to reveal the reasons for this unexpected alignment. First, the refugees endorse interactions with Germans and Berliners as a way to facilitate cultural exchange and ultimately increase integration and conflict mitigation with the host society. Second, the informants invoke inherent refugee experiences – from displacement, to transit, to arrival phases - to explain the importance of integrating with the majority society, or in some instances separating from other refugees. I argue that both sentiments translate to refugees favoring apartments and residential dispersions over collective accommodations and residential concentrations. This thesis is a formative contribution to refugee and forced migration studies due to its focused consideration of the refugee’s volition to live in a residential dispersion and to take interim steps to achieve a high level of integration. Policymakers will find this work’s recommendations for reframing approaches to refugee integration mutually beneficial to refugees and host countries.

Concerning their identity, the Spätaussiedler and the Soviet Jews are in a different situation then other immigrants in Germany or Europe. Their ethnical identity was their legal reason to migrate, the Spätaussiedler for the fact that they were ethnic Germans and were supposed to be brought ‘home’ and the Soviet Jews due to their discrimination in the SU. For that matter, it would be interesting to see in what way the Jewish congregation and the programs by the German government furthered their integration process.

It is a common expectation in migration research that the second generation of immigrants in Europe will be better integrated into the different spheres of the receiving society than the first generation. Second-generation migrants are assumed to be in the process of gaining equality with the majority population, a process that will lead to complete assimilation of the generations to come. Another general understanding, however, is that migration shapes the host societies as much as these societies shape migration. In this context, the book presents a research report on the German results of the TIES survey (The Integration of the Second Generation in Europe). It elaborates various aspects of the integration of the second generation with Turkish and Yugoslavian migration background in Berlin and Frankfurt.
