‘Going beyond the challenge’ means looking at the phenomenon of migration in its complexity, through a multi and interdisciplinary approach. The chapters that make up the first part offer an over-view of the phenomenon, with a reflection on the numbers of migrations in Italy followed by an in-depth examination of its international dimension. The second part focuses on the Italian case, and on the Italian foreign policy towards some African countries. The third part of the book adopts a sociological perspective, including the reconfiguration of the ‘border’ in Italian legislation and the analysis of the reception model promoted in Tuscany. The fourth part analyses public communication, from hate speech to stereotypes, up to the politicization of the migration issue in some European countries. ‘Andare oltre la sfida’ significa guardare al fenomeno delle migrazioni nella sua complessità con un approccio multi e interdisciplinare. I capitoli che compongono la prima parte offrono un inquadramento del fenomeno, con una riflessione sui numeri delle migrazioni in Italia, seguita da un approfondimento sulla sua portata internazionale. La seconda propone un taglio storico sul caso italiano e una riflessione sulla politica estera italiana verso il continente africano. La terza adotta una prospettiva sociologica, indagando la riconfigurazione del ‘confine’ nella legislazione italiana e il modello di accoglienza toscano. La quarta parte è dedicata alla comunicazione pubblica, al discorso di odio, agli stereotipi e alla politicizzazione del tema migrazioni in alcuni paesi europei.

While continually broadcasting the deaths of "illegal immigrants" who have drowned at sea, the majority of mass media incessantly feeds the panic over the "invasion" of Italy by poor immigrants from the Third World. This study is not merely an examination of the familiar limitations of the media, but an investigation of the comprehensive attitude in Italian society of rejecting foreigners who have been transformed into public enemies through a vicious cycle of panic and exclusion. Political dialogue has not proven very aware of the problem of acknowledging the civil rights of the new migrants. The recent cultural rediscovery of the "Italian nation" and the "Italian homeland" - that communal sentiment on which national belonging is based - is not separate from these recent disturbing developments. Not only does this appeal to the "Italian nation" prove weak, but it corresponds to a process of inferiorization of other societies: poorer nations, the underdeveloped regions of Italy itself, and the less wealthy areas in dominant regions. The political left and right both display this disturbing mentality. In this extensively documented, polemical book, Alessandro Dal Lago clearly takes a stand regarding the most profound impulses in Italian society. This study reveals that what is involved in the cultural discussion on migration are the most fundamental parameters and values upon which our democracy rests.

The formulation of Maxwell’s equations completely defines the connection between the electric field and the magnetic field, definitively unifying electricity and magnetism and at the same time providing a theoretical synthesis of all the experimental phenomena connected to these areas. In his revolutionary 1864 memoir where J.C. Maxwell presented his equations, he cites a handful of scientists, which were at the basis of his Theory. Pichi Sermolli’s work with his more than 2750 collections of plants from nearly 150 localities on the Lake Tana expedition in Ethiopia in 1937 was interrupted by World War II, but completed in 1947 at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the British Museum (Natural History), UK. It resulted in preliminary accounts of the vegetation published 1938-40 and a taxonomically arranged account in 1951, all in Italian. Pichi Sermolli’s observations are difficult to locate due to the imperfect maps of the time, but in this book the authors have reconstructed the sequence of the collections, georeferenced the localities, and updated the identifications of the species. By reconstructing Pichi Sermolli’s observations, it is possible to draw conclusions about the vegetation and compare with a recent model of the vegetation of Ethiopia. According to this, the vegetation of the Lake Tana Basin was a complex mosaic of woodland, scrub, forest, farmland and lake shore vegetation now difficult to interpret in detail. Pichi Sermolli’s study of the vegetation in the Semien Mountains demonstrated for the first time the zonation of Ericaceous woodland and Afroalpine vegetation, within which he distinguished Carex monostachya bogs, Afroalpine grasslands with Lobelia rhynchopetalum, and stony and rocky Afroalpine vegetation. This book interprets Pichi Sermolli’s observations in English and compares them with modern knowledge of the region, partly obtained by the present authors’ own field work. It demonstrates how Pichi Sermolli’s studies form a valuable contribution to the understanding of the Ethiopian flora and vegetation.
