La montagna non ci salverà, a meno che prima non si salvi la montagna con i suoi boschi, pascoli, luoghi, comunità di persone, tradizioni culturali, economie, diversità umana ed ecosistemica. La montagna è vista sempre più come un’opportunità di vita, un’alternativa tutto sommato vicina, da quanti desiderano abbandonare le metropoli, soffocate dagli effetti dell’iper agglomerazione sociale e produttiva. Il movimento dei «montanari per scelta» ha tracciato la pista, seguito dalla crisi pandemica e dalla diffusione dello smart working: oggi la pressione posta dal cambiamento climatico sulle città bollenti e inquinate fa emergere con più evidenza una diffusa aspirazione a trasferirsi nelle terre alte, che sia in modo permanente o per lunghi periodi all’anno. La verticalità entra così in queste forme di nuova mobilità umana, che possiamo ricondurre alla categoria più ampia delle migrazioni: chi sono dunque, e chi saranno nel prossimo futuro, i «migranti verticali»? Con un approccio transdisciplinare – dalla sociologia alla climatologia, alla geografia economica e alle scienze ambientali – e sulla base di dati scientifici originali, questo volume collettivo prova a tracciare un profilo delle diverse categorie di persone spinte verso la montagna da un insieme di fattori, tra i quali gli effetti dei mutamenti climatici nelle grandi città iniziano a rivestire un ruolo importante, a livello di immaginari come di progettualità concrete. Se la montagna attira nuovi abitanti, al tempo stesso si va però fragilizzando: frane, eventi estremi, abbandono dei terreni, siccità, invecchiamento delle popolazioni locali. Il clima che cambia espone a nuovi rischi proprio quei luoghi a lungo dimenticati e di cui sono rimasti in pochi a prendersi cura. La montagna non ci salverà, dunque, a meno che prima le città non la aiutino a salvare se stessa, a ritrovare il suo ruolo in un rapporto paritario ed ecosistemico con la pianura, dentro nuove forme di equilibrio, necessariamente metromontano.
