South Asian Transnationalisms explores encounters in twentieth century South Asia beyond the conventional categories of center and periphery, colonizer and colonized. Considering the cultural and political exchanges between artists and intellectuals of South Asia with counterparts in the United States, continental Europe, the Caribbean, and East Asia, the contributors interrogate the relationships between identity and agency, language and space, race and empire, nation and ethnicity, and diaspora and nationality. This book deploys transnational syntaxes such as cinema, dance, and literature to reflect on social, technological, and political change. Most intra-state conflicts since 1945 have originated in insurgencies, not just against incumbent regimes but, more often, against those regimes' external sponsors, whether imperial governments or dominant regional powers. This Handbook focuses on the former group, on the insurgencies and counter-insurgencies fought out as European overseas empires collapsed. Local renderings of the two Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata in Malay and Javanese literature have existed since around the ninth and tenth centuries. In the following centuries new versions were created alongside the old ones, and these opened up interesting new directions. They questioned the views of previous versions and laid different accents, in a continuous process of modernization and adaptation, successfully satisfying the curiosity of their audiences for more than a thousand years. Much of this history is still unclear. For a long time, scholarly research made little progress, due to its preoccupation with problems of origin. The present volume, going beyond identifying sources, analyses the socio-literary contexts and ideological foundations of seemingly similar contents and concepts in different periods; it examines the literary functions of borrowing and intertextual referencing, and calls upon the visual arts to illustrate the independent character of the epic tradition in Southeast Asia.

Bagaimana dengan sejarah awal diaspora Indonesia yang berperan dalam memperkenalkan makanan tanah air ke publik di mancanegara? Buku ini mengulas awal pengenalan dan penerimaan makanan Indonesia oleh publik di Prancis, Suriname, dan Belanda yang berlangsung sejak akhir abad ke-19 hingga dekade 1940-an. Banyak fakta menarik untuk diketahui di sepanjang perjalanan itu. Penyajian kuliner Jawa seperti nasi, sate, kari, dan gurami di Exposition Universelle Paris 1889 ternyata pernah ditangani oleh seorang juru masak kenamaan Prancis dari restoran La Maison Chevet. Seorang peneliti pangan Amerika Serikat berhasil mempelajari teknik membuat tempe dari Sinem, seorang perempuan Jawa di Suriname. Ada pula kisah Oesin dan Saiman, dua orang diaspora Hindia yang merupakan pengusaha Hindia pertama yang memiliki bisnis Indische restaurant di Belanda. Melalui cerita stan kuliner Jawa di Exposition Universelle 1889 di Paris, warung-warung di Suriname yang didirikan oleh para buruh migran Jawa yang berdatangan sejak 1890 hingga 1932, serta restoran-restoran Hindia (Indische restaurant) di Belanda yang jumlahnya berkembang sejak akhir abad ke-19 hingga 1940-an, kita bisa merefleksikan bahwa pengenalan makanan Indonesia di mancanegara pada masa itu bukanlah semata soal bisnis untuk meraup laba. Ini adalah tentang bagaimana makanan menjadi sebuah sarana untuk menjaga ikatan emosional para diaspora Indonesia terhadap tanah air mereka, melahirkan benih-benih identitas kebangsaan yang terus tumbuh dan terpatri dalam jiwa mereka.
