Para pemerhati geologi menyadari betul, terdapat banyak organisme mikro yang telah ikut menghuni Bumi ini, salah satu di antaranya adalah Foraminifera. Jenis binatang mikro ini sangat unik, baik dalam bentuk fosil maupun yang masih hidup mempunyai sejarah hidup yang sangat panjang. Dengan berbagai macam penelitian yang telah berhasil dikembangkan pada masa lampau, akhirnya para ilmuwan kebumian, di samping mengembangkan sebagai ilmu konsep dasar, memanfaatkan ilmu mikropaleontologi yang mengkhususkan perhatian pada Foraminifera ikut berperan serta dalam usaha membuka rahasia alam. Bahkan, mikropaleontologi mempunyai andil yang cukup besar dalam keberhasilan eksplorasi geologi, khususnya dalam bidang sumber daya alam, minyak, dan gas bumi.
