‘The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.’ – Mahatma Gandhi Animals have the power to change people’s lives. They can be loving, loyal companions that will never judge. In World War I, many Australian and New Zealand units – army, naval and air squadrons – had animal mascots. This thoroughly researched book containing a treasure trove of archival photographs shows that all types of animals served as mascots – a virtual Noah`s Ark of animals ranging from dogs and cats, rats and insects to bears and primates, birds and donkeys. Anzac Mascots explores animal mascots, both official and unofficial, that served in World War I, and aims to illustrate their purpose, how they were selected, what happened to them after the war and, finally, the far-reaching effects their prolific use had after the war. This book reveals that people alone did not win World War I; animals played a vital part. Animals, through their unwavering devotion and boundless affection, kept soldiers’ spirits high, provided a temporary link to normality and peace, and reminded what they were fighting for – home and country.

Smoky The Brave written by Damien Lewis and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-04 with History categories.

The extraordinary, touching true story of Smoky, the smallest--and arguably bravest--dog of World War II In February 1944, as Japanese military advances threatened to overwhelm New Guinea, a tiny, four-pound Yorkshire Terrier was discovered hiding in the island's thick jungles. A total mystery as to her origins, she was adopted by US Army Air Force Corporal William "Bill" Wynne, an air-crewman in a photo reconnaissance squadron, becoming an irreplaceable lucky charm for the unit. When Smoky saved Wynne's life by barking a warning of an incoming kamikaze attack, he nicknamed her the "angel from a foxhole." Smoky's exploits continued when she jumped for the unit in a specially designed parachute and famously joined the aircrews flying daring sorties in the war-torn skies. But her most heroic feat was running a cable through a seventy-foot pipe no wider than four inches in places to enable critical communication lines to be run across an airbase which had just been seized from the enemy, saving hundreds of ground-crew from being exposed to enemy bombing. In recognition of her efforts, Smoky was awarded eight battle stars. Smoky the Brave brings to vivid life the danger and excitement of the many missions of World War II's smallest hero.

“Cats, rabbits and even the bear that inspired Winnie the Pooh appear in remarkable photos of the 16 million animals caught up in World War One.” —DailyMail.com Animals in the Great War looks at the use of animals by all sides in the Great War and to what effect. In the main, it focuses greatly on horses, dogs and pigeons but also addresses the war efforts of other animals. In the early years of the war horses were, to a large extent, the only form of transport that was available to the British Army, ranging from use by cavalry units, artillery units as well others such as the Army Ordnance Corps for the conveying of ammunition supplies to men fighting at the front. Britain sent an estimated one million horses to fight in the war, most of them to France and Belgium, but only 60,000 of them ever returned home, and only then were they returned because of the intervention of Winston Churchill. Dogs also played a major role in the war, especially in the trenches on the Western Front. They were used as mascots by the different regiments and in some cases, they were companions for homesick soldiers. They were also used for sentry duties in the trenches as well as catching rats, and they were used as messengers and to sniff out wounded soldiers in No Man’s Land. Animals in the Great War explores how everyday domestic animals were transformed into remarkable wartime heroes, who more than did their bit for the war effort.
