Excerpt from Military Music The Illustrations of Wind - Instruments on the nine Plates are taken from the authentic specimens in the Museum of Instruments attached to the Royal Conservatoire of Music, at Brussels. When mentioning the present work to M. Mahillon, the "Directeur du Musée du Conservatoire," requesting permission to avail myself of the fine collection of ancient instruments, which under his careful supervision has reached a state of completeness hardly to be found elsewhere, he not only placed it readily at my service, but also gave me the benefit of his wide experience and sound judgment, and I take this opportunity of tendering him my sincerest thanks. Mr. D. J. Blaikley has also kindly given me some valuable assistance. Some of the Military Marches, and other musical pieces, I obtained from the Royal Libraries of Munich, Darmstadt, Berlin, and from the British Museum. For the Dance Songs I am indebted to Herr Franz M. Bohme's valuable works on Altdeutsche Lieder, and Geschichte des Tanzes in Deutschland, and for some historical notices Coussemaker's Histoire de l'harmonie au moyen age and Schletterer's Studien zur Geschichte der franzōsischen Musik have been my authorities.
