Given that Dr. Mira Markovic is the wife of Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic, perhaps one could have expected from this book a diatribe against the West, a propagandistic tool of Serbian nationalism. If such is looked for, it is not to be found here. For an interpretation of why the multifaceted ethnic and religious Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has broken down into a strife which has baffled Europe and the world - for this reason alone, Answer is worth reading. Mira Markovic laments that the southern Slavic peoples had much more in common, historically and culturally, than that which divides them. She bemoans the fact that the works of Miroslav Krleza can no longer be studied in Serbia and those of Janko Veselinovic and Djure Jaksic in Croatia. She laments the passing of Serbia into nationalism and chauvinism, greed and egoism as opposed to socialism and altruism. She is varying in her levels of criticism of Serbia and the Serbian establishment - but she is at all times critical. This is a book of the Left, and also a critique of the same. With the Left, worldwide, in disarray it is refreshing to read such an eloquent advocate of left-wing ideas and socialism. Those of the old, humane, humanitarian, utopian, justice-seeking Left will find much to reflect on, much to appreciate, much to agree on, and maybe even a cause for hope.

Originally published in Belgrade during the fall of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Night & Day offers a special personal insight into the events and personalities of this era. Mira Markovic is ideally placed by virtue of her family and education to offer such a response. Her parents fought alongside Tito in resisting Nazi occupation (her mother was executed by the Nazis); she is married to Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic; she is a respected Professor of Sociology at the University of Belgrade; and she is a leading intellectual of the Left in her country. Mira Markovic writes from the perspective of an individual who grew up in the socialist system that made Yugoslavia the envy of the communist world. Her Yugoslavia was not a country of Croats, Serbs, Montenegrins, Slovenes, and Muslims, but a country with a federal identity that subsumed these ethnic and religious affiliations. She represents the remaining communists who have seen the rise and fall of the world created by Tito's partisans, and she serves as a witness to the aftershocks of the collapse of this federation into chaos. Her writing is informed by her intelligence and charged by her emotional response to events. There is no better way to understand the crisis in Yugoslavia than to read this book.

From the introduction: "Throughout Serbia's history no leader has risen to become as powerful and celebrated as Slobodan Milosevic, or fallen as low. At the onset of the twenty-first century, he was instrumental in determining the Serb's fate, and also that of former Yugoslavia and the Balkans. And no woman throughout Serbian history (and few elsewhere) has been as influential as Milosevic's wife, Professor Mira Markovic. This book is about them, their regime, and the circumstances in which the Serbs encountered their greatest setbacks and became global pariahs. Although there have been many attempts to tell Slobodan Milosevic's story, Milosevic and Markovic is the first book to shows us the real person. Originally written in Serbo-Croatian by a Yugoslav journalist and driven underground in its native country, Milosevic and Markovic offers a first-hand account of Milosevic's life, including the recent events in Kosovo. Slavoljub Djukic sheds light on Milosevic's autocratic rule, showing how he, with his wife, Mira Markovic, has dominated Serbia's political life for the last twelve years - first as president of Serbia and later as president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). Engrossing and beautifully written, Milosevic and Markovic is both a biography and an engaging political commentary on events in Yugoslavia and Serbia over the last two decades. Avoiding the speculation and intrigue that surrounds Milosevic, Djukic provides a clear, factual commentary that shows that the results of the Milosevic/Markovic regime will be felt by the people of Yugoslavia for years to come.

Since the regime of Slobodan Milosevic was spectacularly overthrown on 5 October 2000, little has been written about subsequent political developments in Serbia. The perception of Milosevic as a criminal leader who plunged the former Yugoslavia into bloodshed and used violence to achieve his aims is not widely disputed among Western observers. However, to what extent is this view of Milosevic shared by people in Serbia? Here Janine Clark offers insights into and an understanding of this troubled country. She argues that many Serbs do not regard Milosevic as a criminal leader but rather as a 'bad' leader whose greatest crimes were against his own people. This has important implications for how Serbia deals with its past and for reconciliation and peace-building in the former Yugoslavia.

This study examines, in the context of Serbia's political and cultural development, how in the late 1980s a faction within the Serbian Communist Party, led by Slobodon Milosevic, was able to exploit national and constitutional tensions within the former Yugoslavia in order to preserve its power.
