With the ever-increasing emphasis on the more athletic aspects of ballet technique, students tend to underestimate the importance of detailed hand movements and small, intimate gestures. Studying the exercises in this book will help to guard against the loss of a precious part of our ballet heritage. Truthful motivation is the key to expressive gesture and these gestures need to be as carefully studied and as clearly controlled as a pirouette or entrechat.

Mikhail Berkut is a critically acclaimed choreographer, stage producer and professional ballet teacher. Berkut has produced several videos on dance for adults and children. He has written many articles on dance for leading international magazines and is the author of several books, including his memoirs of his early family life and career in music and dance in his native Russia, North America and Europe. Origin of Mime and Dance is the culmination of his life's work. The result of decades of intensive research, Origin of Mime and Dance is an exploration of the motion of the human body and its gradual evolution from instinct to artifice - the long journey from unconscious reflex to self-conscious performance. The book is split into two sections: Natural Motion and Artificial Motion. Beautifully illustrated, it aims to clarify some basic principles regarding the anthropology and evolution of natural motion and its transformation into performed compositions. In the process, Berkut hopes to open up new ways of looking at these areas. 'Berkut's ability to tackle every subject from a practical, as well as an analytical point of view is always remarkable ... this comprehensive work fills an important gap ... It is a must for all dance-related organizations.' Hans-Theodor Wohlfahrt, Dance Critic and Historian '... a most important contribution to our knowledge of body movement in time and space, as an instrument of artistic expression.' Giorgio Tellan, Italian Art Historian

Mime Music And Drama On The Eighteenth Century Stage written by Edward Nye and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-21 with Drama categories.

The 'ballet d'action' was one of the most successful and controversial forms of theatre in the early modern period. A curious hybrid of dance, mime and music, its overall and overriding intention was to create drama. It was danced drama rather than dramatic dance, musical drama rather than dramatic music. Most modern critical studies of the ballet d'action treat it more narrowly as stage dance and very few view it as part of the history of mime. Little use has previously been made of the most revealing musical evidence. This innovative book does justice to the distinctive hybrid nature of the ballet d'action by taking a comparative approach, using contemporary literature and literary criticism, music, mime and dance from a wide range of English and European sources. Edward Nye presents a fascinating study of this important and influential part of eighteenth-century European theatre.

To most people the art of mime will usually bring to mind one name, Marcel Marceau. But, of course, this art of portraying character or telling a story by body movements has a very wide range. We can see mime in ballet, in silent films, in the dance dramas of the Far East and India, in the circus, and in the legitimate theater. In Eyes on Mime, Katherine Sorley Walker traces its development through history, the technique of different gesture languages belonging to different cultures, and the varying ways in which mime is used today, not only in the theater but in our everyday life. Illustrated with over 30 photographs, this interesting book shows just how flourishing and lively an art mime is. -- from dust jacket.
