Excerpt from Mineral Resources of Armenia and Anatolia Flourishing industries therefore, are perforce subordinate to the existence of order and peace. Fortunately, there is reason to believe that the nation who will kindly lead us will intend to carry out a broad-minded policy to favor the expansion of min ing and its allied industries in our own country. With the adop tion of such a course many interesting features of technical practice in these territories will doubtless be revealed within the next decade or so. Most mining engineers are familiar with the admirable results obtained in Mexico, within a com paratively short period of time, nor is the result of push and energy in our own country less strikng. Comparisons are instructive, at times, and it was futile to: belittle the importance of granting due recognition to modern industrial tendencies as exhibited in the practice of the more advanced nations. A study of these features and the causes conductive thereto, may advantageously shape the policy to be adopted by those upon whom the responsibility of developing the country'smatural resources has been thrust. Excerpt from Mineral Resources of Georgia and Caucasia: Manganese Industry of Georgia The Georgians are an ancient civilized race with three thousand years of existence, but in spite of that very little known, as Georgia since 1801 ceased to be an independent kingdom, was forcibly annexed by the Russian Empire in violation of the Treaty of 1783, and was never allowed to make herself known to the outside world. Geography. Georgia is situated in Transcaucasia, between the Black and the Caspian Seas(40-49 northern latitude, and 39-47 east of Greenwich). She is separated from the North Caucasus by the celebrated Caucasian mountain chain, which stretches for a distance of a thousand miles from the Black Sea to the Caspian, and has an average height of 10,000 feet and in some places, as in the peaks of the Elbruz and the Kasbek, even 18,000 feet. Georgia comprises the following provinces and districts: Tiflis, Zakathal, Kutais, Sukhum, the northern part of the Black Sea Province towards Tuapse, Ardahan and Olti districts, provinces of Batum and Lazistan up to Trebizond. The total area of this territory is 43,000 square miles. The frontiers of Georgia are: in the north, the Caucasian mountain chain; in the east, Aderbeijan; in the south, Armenia; and in the south-west, Turkey. Among the rivers the most prominent are: Kura, 310 miles long; Ingur, 95 miles;Rion, 140 miles; Chorokb, 160 miles;Terek, 210 miles. The climate of Georgia is very similar to that of Italy and Spain. Under the protection of the Caucasian mountains and with plenty of moisture, there is a rich vegetation, and at a height of 4,000 feet there grow vast forests of oak, beech, chestnut, pines boxwood, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book furnishes detailed information about Turkey's existing mineral resources, besides providing concepts and ideas which may help the search for potential mineral resources in the future. It is a first book in the English-language international literature on mineral resources of Turkey and it is aimed at economic geologists, mining engineers, and mining investors, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. This work focuses mainly on a range of mineral systems and related geological features throughout Turkey. Taking into account the lack of international literature on these resources, a considerable portion of the book explains the geological context of the region and the settings in which the mineral resources occur. The genetic characteristics of these mineral resources are emphasized and important information is also presented on their economic aspects. All chapter contributions are prepared by researchers and professional geologists.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: ... PREFACE This book is a concise collection of various geological facts studied in the works of many reliable European research students who travelled in Armenia from 1830 up to the present time. It. was an essay required in partial fulfillment of my subject of major interest in the University. A complete bibliography has been appended for those who are interested in the details of the subject. The development of the natural resources of the country, for economic as well as for scientific purposes, is still in an embryonic condition. It is hoped that favorable political conditions, increased education, public zeal and its capital will, in time bring about the desirable improvements and make the natural wealth of the country available for its people. H. A. Khakajian. Columbia University, New York, N. Y. MORPHOLOGICAL REVIEW Armenia has not been for a long time past an independent political structure. But from a geographical point of view it represents an emphatic unity in that long chain of high plateaux, which runs in long succession from the Aegian Sea to the borders of China. As a link of this chain it has no sharp borders on the east and west, but grades toward the west quite gradually into Anatolian highland, and in the east to the Iranian plateau. On the other hand in the north and south the Armenian highland, whose average elevation is 1500-1800 meters, is steeply shut in by high border ranges, in which rugged snow-covered peaks of from 2,500-4,000 meters heights alternate with deep ravines. The contrast, when one comes down from the border ranges to the plateau, is most surprising between the characteristic Alpine peaks of the former and the open landscape of the latter, which displays in part limestone ridges with universally...

Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, 1924, Vol. 2: Nonmetals Parish, La., which, however, will not be worked or some time. The agreement between the American producers and the Sicilian Sulphur Consortium, described in Mineral Resources for 1922 and 1923, has apparently aided the Sicilian producers. Prior to the World War the annual production of sulphur in Sicily averaged over long tons. The production during and since the war has decreased materially, owing largely to the increased competition for European markets by chea ly produced American sulphur from Louisiana and Texas mines. T e historical table on page 3 shows the tremendous increase in recent years in the exports of sulphur from the United States. In 1922 the production of sulphur in Sicily had dwindled to long tons, but in 1923 it increased to long tons, and in 1924 it amounted to long tons. From 1880 through 1903 an average annual production of long tons of sulphur was made, starting with over 500 tons in 1880 and approximating tons in 1903. This comprehensive textbook covers all major topics related to the utilization of mineral resources for human activities. It begins with general concepts like definitions of mineral resources, mineral resources and humans, recycling mineral resources, distribution of minerals resources across Earth, and international standards in mining, among others. Then it turns to a classification of mineral resources, covering the main types from a geological standpoint. The exploration of mineral resources is also treated, including geophysical methods of exploration, borehole geophysical logging, geochemical methods, drilling methods, and mineral deposit models in exploration. Further, the book addresses the evaluation of mineral resources, from sampling techniques to the economic evaluation of mining projects (i.e. types and density of sampling, mean grade definition and calculation, Sichel’s estimator, evaluation methods – classical and geostatistical, economic evaluation – NPV, IRR, and PP, estimation of risk, and software for evaluating mineral resources). It subsequently describes key mineral resource exploitation methods (open pit and underground mining) and the mineral processing required to obtain saleable products (crushing, grinding, sizing, ore separation, and concentrate dewatering, also with some text devoted to tailings dams). Lastly, the book discusses the environmental impact of mining, covering all the aspects of this very important topic, from the description of diverse impacts to the environmental impact assessment (EIA), which is essential in modern mining projects.
