Zweck dieses Buches ist es, die in vielen Zeitschriften und Büchern zerstreuten neuesten Erkenntnisse über die Untersuchung, Kennzeichnung und Bewertung von Mineralölen in einem Handbuch für das Laboratorium zusammenzufassen. Es lag nahe, die Fette, Wachse und Harze mitzu behandeln, weil sie mit den Mineralölen chemisch verwandt sind oder ähn lich wie diese verwendet werden. Für dieses Ziel war es unerläßlich, den einzelnen Abschnitten eine kurze Übersicht über den jeweiligen Stand der Technik voranzustellen, die darüber Auskunft gibt, auf welche Merkmale bei der Untersuchung nicht nur hinsichtlich Herkunft, Gewinnung und Arbeitsweise, sondern auch bezüglich der Prüfungsmethodik und Analysencharakteristik besonders zu achten ist. Durch entsprechende Literaturhinweise wurde die Möglichkeit gegeben, sich auch über wichtige analytische Erkenntnisse, die im Rahmen dieses Buches nicht ausführlich genug behandelt werden konnten, ein gehender zu unterrichten. Bei den Analysenmethoden wurden neben den deutschen Normen vorschriften die ausländischen Erfahrungen, insbesondere die auf dem Erdölgebiet von der American Society for Testing Materials (A.S.T.M. Methoden) und vom Institute of Petroleum, London (I.P.-Methoden) standardisierten Analysenvorschriften, praktisch lückenlos berücksichtigt. Das Gebiet der fetten Öle und der verwandten Stoffgruppen wurde so weit berücksichtigt, als es im Rahmen eines Grenzgebietes für die Labo ratoriumspraxis der Mineralöle erforderlich ist. Für diejenigen, die sich für die Analysen und Prüfmethoden der Fette näher interessieren müssen, sei schon heute auf das von Prof. H. P. KAUFMANN, Münster, geplante Buch, das im selben Verlag erscheinen wird, hingewiesen.

Paraffins: Chemistry and Technology deals primarily with fundamentals of those methods and processes for the manufacture and chemical treatment of the paraffinic hydrocarbons. The present book, the first edition of which was published by the Akademie-Verlag GmbH, Berlin, in 1956, and an unchanged reprint of which of the first edition was necessary in 1959, has been revised, in 1962, for translation into English. The book begins with a discussion of the production and manufacture of the paraffinic hydrocarbons. Separate chapters then cover the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide by means of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis; the chlorination, sulfochlorination, and oxidation the paraffins along with the corresponding products; and the direct nitration of the paraffinic hydrocarbons. Subsequent chapters deal with the sulfoxidation and other substitution reactions of the paraffinic hydrocarbons and isomerization of the paraffinic hydrocarbons. The book is directed primarily to the chemist involved in research and development. It will also give the advanced student a picture of the many-sided possibilities of the use of the paraffinic hydrocarbons, which were long regarded as extraordinarily unreactive.
