The full impact of job cuts and changes in journalism's environment has yet to be studied for its possible lasting or even-short term effects on the value of diversity throughout media organizations including the value of minorities in leadership. Job cuts in news media can adversely and disproportionally affect all racial and ethnic minorities from rank-and-file reporters to the decision-making and hiring managers. It is necessary to explore the perceptions about diversity's value in newsrooms as it competes with heightened financial concerns. Having a deeper understanding of the perceptions and attitudes held by traditional racial and ethnic minorities working within the tempest of change can lead to a more productive navigation of diversity's utility in news organizations. Those perceptions also help explore and understand the use of frames and the framing process that takes place within the newsroom itself and in news coverage related to race, ethnicity, and other forms of diversity. This study, based in qualitative methods, used data gathered through interviews of minority participants in both management and non-supervisory positions to explore minority journalist's perceptions about the overall value of diversity and about their worth as minorities within news organizations. The study found that minority journalists, while not all relishing a place in leadership, perceive benefits of minorities having a seat at the proverbial table, where policy and strategy about diversity issues are developed and supported. Minority journalists also perceive that diversity, especially concerning race and ethnicity, lags far behind other news media concerns.

Social change triggered by the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s sent the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) on a fifty-year mission to dismantle an exclusionary professional standard that envisioned the ideal journalist as white, straight, and male. In this book, Gwyneth Mellinger explores the complex history of the decades-long ASNE diversity initiative, which culminated in the failed Goal 2000 effort to match newsroom demographics with those of the U.S. population. Drawing upon exhaustive reviews of ASNE archival materials, Mellinger examines the democratic paradox through the lens of the ASNE, an elite organization that arguably did more than any other during the twentieth century to institutionalize professional standards in journalism and expand the concepts of government accountability and the free press. The ASNE would emerge in the 1970s as the leader in the newsroom integration movement, but its effort would be frustrated by structures of exclusion the organization had embedded into its own professional standards. Explaining why a project so promising failed so profoundly, Chasing Newsroom Diversity expands our understanding of the intransigence of institutional racism, gender discrimination, and homophobia within democracy.

Is TV news racist? If the purpose of local news is to cover individual communities and to present issues of interest and concern to local audiences, why are local newscasts so similar in markets around the country? These are the questions that motivated Heider's research, leading to the development of this book. Recognizing that local news is the outlet through which most people get their news, Heider ventured into the local television newsrooms in two moderate-size, culturally diverse U.S. markets to observe the news process. In this report, he uses his insider's perspective to examine why local television news coverage of people of color does not occur in more meaningful ways. Heider examines the perceptions of racism and ethnicity, and addresses such dichotomies as "white" news (content determined by white managers) being delivered by non-white news anchors, thus giving the appearance of "non-white" news. He also considers how coverage of minorities influences viewers' perceptions of their minority neighbors. Heider then sets forth a new theoretical concept--incognizant racism--as a way of explaining how news workers consistently ignore news in significant portions of the communities they cover. This contribution to the minorities and media discussion provides important insights into the newsroom decision-making process and the sociology and structure of newsrooms. It is required reading for all who are involved in news reporting, mass communication, media and minority studies, and cultural issues in today's society.
