Beberapa jenis empon-empon lokal yang umum dikenal di Indonesia, antara lain temu putih (Curcuma zedoaria (Berg.) Roscoe), temu ireng (Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb.) dan temu mangga (Curcuma mangga Val.). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam rangka eksplorasi pemanfaatan minyak atsiri temu putih, temu ireng dan temu mangga sebagai antioksidan, antibakteri dan aromaterapi pengharum ruangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa minyak atsiri temu putih, temu ireng dan temu mangga berturut-turut mengandung 24, 19 dan 14 komponen kimia yang semua telah teridentifikasi. Komponen kimia terbesar dalam minyak atsiri temu putih, temu ireng dan temu mangga, berturut-turut adalah kamfor, iso-valeral dan pentadekana (dengan kadar sebesar 11,40%; 44,92%; dan 38,51%). Minyak atsiri temu mangga (IC50=54,82 ppm) dan temu ireng (IC50=64,33 ppm) termasuk katagori antioksidan kuat, sedangkan minyak atsiri temu putih (IC50=118,30 ppm) termasuk katagori antioksidan sedang. Minyak atsiri temu mangga mempunyai aktivitas antibakteri S. aureus ATCC 25923 yang termasuk katagori kuat (zona inhibisi=11,13 mm), sedangkan aktivitas antibakteri S. aureus ATCC 25923 minyak atsiri temu putih (zona inhibisi=10,24 mm) dan temu ireng (zona inhibisi=8,81 mm) termasuk katagori sedang. Minyak atsiri temu putih, temu ireng, dan temu mangga tidak memiliki aktivitas antibakteri E. coli ATCC 25922. Hasil uji hedonik minyak atsiri sebagai aromaterapi pengharum ruangan menunjukkan bahwa semua minyak atsiri baik minyak atsiri temu mangga (nilai uji hedonik=3,25), temu ireng (nilai uji hedonik=2,75), dan temu putih (nilai uji hedonik=2,75) termasuk katagori cukup disukai panelis.
