Ésta es una obra singular de Juan Enrique Pestalozzi. Singular porque no es muy conocida ni citada entre sus obras y, sin embargo, es una de las más importantes y fundamentales de ellas. Es su obra filosófica. En la misma encontramos, de nuestro autor, su Antropología, su Ética, su Filosofía Social, su Filosofía de la Educación. Cuando la escribió, Pestalozzi no era todavía el pedagogo que fue después; era solamente un escritor de la época de la Ilustración, con buenas aportaciones al pensamiento de su época. Pero tenía ya una idea clara de lo que debía ser la educación del pueblo y de los métodos con que había que promoverla. El autor escribió el presente libro durante tres años, de 1793 a 1795, es decir, tras la viva experiencia de la Revolución Francesa. Precisamente suele decirse que constituye la reflexión profunda que dicho suceso provocó en nuestro autor, haciéndole revisar todos sus planteamientos ideológicos, sociales y políticos. En este sentido es una obra de madurez y de crítica, en que Pestalozzi, a sus cincuenta años de edad, hace una especie de filosofía de la historia para explicarse y explicar lo que es la humanidad y lo que debe ser, cuál es el destino del género humano y, por consiguiente, cómo ha de orientarse la formación y educación del mismo.

Prompted by the ongoing debate among science educators over ‘nature of science’, and its importance in school and university curricula, this book is a clarion call for a broad re-conceptualizing of nature of science in science education. The authors draw on the ‘family resemblance’ approach popularized by Wittgenstein, defining science as a cognitive-epistemic and social-institutional system whose heterogeneous characteristics and influences should be more thoroughly reflected in science education.
