In ancient Greek comedy, nothing is ever 'just a joke'. This book treats jokes with the seriousness they deserve, and shows that far from being mere surface-level phenomena, jokes in Greek comedy are in fact a site of poetic experimentation whose creative force expressly rivals that of serious literature. Focusing on the fragments of authors including Cratinus, Pherecrates, and Archippus alongside the extant plays of Aristophanes, Naomi Scott argues that jokes are critical to comedy's engagement with the language and convention of poetic representation. More than this, she suggests that jokes and poetry share a kind of kinship as two modes of utterance which specifically set out to flout the rules of ordinary speech. Starting with bad puns, and taking in crude slapstick, vulgar innuendo and frivolous absurdism, Jokes in Greek Comedy demonstrates that the apparently inconsequential jokes which pepper the surface of Greek comedy in fact amplify the impossible and defamiliarizing qualities of standard poetic practice, and reveal the fundamental ridiculousness of treating make-believe as a serious endeavour. In this way, jokes form a central part of Greek comedy's contestation of the role of language, and particularly poetic language, in the truthful representation of reality.

The Chorus of Drama in the Fourth Century BCE seeks to upend conventional thinking about the development of drama from the fifth to the fourth centuries and to provide a new way of talking and thinking about the choruses of drama after the deaths of Euripides and Sophocles. Set in the context of a theatre industry extending far beyond the confines of the City Dionysia and the city of Athens, the identity of choral performers and the significance of their contribution to the shape and meaning of drama in the later Classical period (c.400-323) as a whole is an intriguing and under-explored area of enquiry. This volume draws together the fourth-century historical, material, dramatic, literary, and philosophical sources that attest to the activity and quality of dramatic choruses and, having considered the positive evidence for dramatic choral activity, provides a radical rethinking of two oft-cited yet ill-understood phenomena that have traditionally supported the idea that the chorus of drama 'declined' in the fourth century: the inscription of χοŕο*u~ με ́λο*s in papyri and manuscripts in place of fully written-out choral odes, and Aristotle's invocation of embolima (Poetics 1456a25-32). It also explores the important role of influential fourth-century authors such as Plato, Demosthenes, and Xenophon, as well as artistic representations of choruses on fourth-century monuments, in shaping later scholars' understanding of the dramatic chorus throughout the Classical period, reaching conclusions that have significant implications for the broader story we wish to tell about Attic drama and its most enigmatic and fundamental element, the chorus.

Associando a un presunto fine didascalico la forma propria dell’epigramma ed elevando nel linguaggio letterario argomenti zoologici o geografici, Claudiano appare a suo agio nell’elaborazione di una poesia, che, svincolata dalla precisione empirica o scientifica, non intende propriamente insegnare, ma semplicemente condividere lo stupore per aspetti bizzarri del reale. Il testo latino è presentato qui in una nuova edizione critica, accompagnata da introduzione, traduzione italiana a fronte e commento. ********* In the poetic collection attributed to Claudian (IV-V cent. AD) and known to us by the spurious title of carmina minora three short hexametric poems present topics of the minutest doxography: in the carm. min. 9 Hystrix, 28 Nilus and 49 Torpedo, in fact, the late Latin poet’s curiosity about the mirabile by way of the description of a place (the Nile river) or an animal (the porcupine and the torpedo fish), and his attraction to the literature of the ‘paradox’ go together. In combining the essence of the epigram’s form with a supposedly didactic purpose, and by elevating zoological or geographical topics to the level of high literature, Claudian appears comfortable in creating a poetry which is free of empirical or scientific precision and has no intention of being educative, but simply wishes to share the wonderment at the bizarre aspects of reality. The Latin text is presented here in a new critical edition, accompanied by introduction, parallel translation in Italian and commentary.

Making a corpus of Latin grammatical papyri is not simply a contribution to Latin Papyrology, but especially a decisive element for our knowledge of ‘manuals’ in schools in the Eastern Roman Empire, their linguistic theories and the way in which they used to ‘write’ Grammar. A diachronical and diatopical analysis, in parallel with the known (Tèchnai and the) Late Antiquity’s Artes, will support a new step while making a corpus of Grammaticae Romanae Fragmenta. In 1979, Alfons Wouters published a corpus containing twentyfive grammatical papyri. Only one was Latin, the P.Lit.Lond. 184 (Brit. Libr. inv. 2723) + P.Mich. VII 429, which contains an Ars concerning the parts of speech and other grammatical themes, written on the verso of a military document (II a.D.). Today, after more than thirty years, new documents can be added to Wouters’ corpus, and the book inglobes all of them. Artes Grammaticae in frammenti collects and scrutinizes all the known Latin and bilingual (Greek-Latin and Latin-Greek) grammatical texts on papyrus in order to add further tesserae in the mosaic of our knowledge of forms, practices and circulation of Latin grammar and Roman education.
