Upon hearing of the assault on his publisher, he lost no time in avowing the authorship of the offensive review, and in intimating, in accordance with the usage of the period, that his friend Mr. Hugh Fraser was prepared to receive a message. A hostile meeting was arranged the combatants met in a field in the Barnet Road; and three shots were exchanged, at the last fire Maginu's bullet grazing the collar of his adversary's coat, and the bullet of the latter striking the ground beside Maginu's boot. Upon this third ineffectual exchange of shots, the account runs, the seconds interfered, and the parties, bowing to each other, left the ground without explanation. Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 1 of 2: Chiefly Historical AT the close of my forty years of teaching in the Rochester Theological Seminary I print the following addresses, sermons, and essays, with the hope that they may be found of sufficient value to justify my putting them into this permanent form. Many of the occa sions on which they have been delivered may be fairly called historical; some of the essays are more properly theological; the first of these volumes represents in general the former, while the second represents the latter class of material. Yet they one and all express the convictions with regard to fundamental truth which have been growing and deepening in my mind during my long period of service as an instructor of students for the ministry. The one system of doctrine, which I regard as not only scriptural, but rational, gives unity and color to both volumes, and the variety of circum stances under which the several papers have been pro duced has permitted repetition of ideas and illustrations which would have been avoided in a more elaborate treatise. I am inclined to think that our Lord uttered more than once the same maxims and parables, and I would hide behind his example. At any rate, I com mend these hitherto scattered productions to his keep ing, and would add to them the motto of our seminary, C hristo Deo augustus H. Strong. But I would not yield to such wishes alone. The "Studies" were written nearly eight years ago, on an impulse given by the dissatisfaction I felt concerning the character of much of the biographical work which the newly awakened interest in woman had called out. Until women are wholly free; until all that God permits, man also leaves open to them, - it is inevitable that they should do a great deal of poor work.
