Sacrifice And Regeneration written by Yael Mabat and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12 with History categories.

At the dawn of the twentieth century, while Lima's aristocrats hotly debated the future of a nation filled with "Indians," thousands of Aymara and Quechua Indians left the pews of the Catholic Church and were baptized into Seventh-day Adventism. One of the most staggering Christian phenomena of our time, the mass conversion from Catholicism to various forms of Protestantism in Latin America was so successful that Catholic contemporaries became extremely anxious on noticing that parts of the Indigenous population in the Andean plateau had joined a Protestant church. In Sacrifice and Regeneration Yael Mabat focuses on the extraordinary success of Seventh-day Adventism in the Andean highlands at the beginning of the twentieth century and sheds light on the historical trajectories of Protestantism in Latin America. By approaching the religious conversion among Indigenous populations in the Andes as a multifaceted and dynamic interaction between converts, missionaries, and their social settings and networks, Mabat demonstrates how the religious and spiritual needs of converts also brought salvation to the missionaries. Conversion had important ramifications on the way social, political, and economic institutions on the local and national level functioned. At the same time, socioeconomic currents had both short-term and long-term impacts on idiosyncratic religious practices and beliefs that both accelerated and impeded religious change. Mabat's innovative historical perspective on religious transformation allows us to better comprehend the complex and often contradictory way in which Protestantism took shape in Latin America.

Noted theologian Samuel Escobar offers a magisterial survey and study of Christology in Latin America. In Search of Christ in Latin America examines the figure of Jesus Christ in the context of Latin American culture, starting with the first Spanish influence in the sixteenth century and moving through popular religiosity and liberationist themes in Catholic and Protestant thought of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, culminating in an important description of the work of the Fraternidad Teológica Latinoamericana (FTL). Escobar provides theological, historical, and cultural analysis of Latin American understandings of Christ and places liberation theology within its social and revolutionary context. This book is an important step toward a rich understanding of the spiritual reality and powerful message of Jesus.

The articles in this issue of the Journal of Latin American Theology focus on history, mission, politics, migration, and worship. Luis Tapia Rubio discusses the colonial nature of Bartolomé de Las Casas’s sixteenth-century mission in Latin America and sits with the disturbing question of whether or not it is possible for Christian mission to be anything but colonial. Valdir Steuernagel summarizes key points from the Lausanne Congresses on World Evangelization and diagnoses current challenges leading up to Lausanne IV in September 2024. Darío López R. illustrates the antidemocratic nature of fundamentalist evangelicals active in Latin American politics through the case study of the 2021 presidential elections in Peru. Milton Mejía discusses the same political phenomenon but in the context of Colombia’s decades-long armed conflict. His case study is the 2016 referendum on the peace agreement, which evangelical opposition helped tip the balance to reject. Mariani Xavier seeks to “humanize” immigrants by highlighting five biblical insights on immigration and then outlining action steps for Christians to put these biblical insights into practice. Fabio Salguero Fagoaga diagnoses one reason that Christians fail to offer robust hospitality to immigrants and refugees: aporophobia, or discrimination against the poor. The book reviews in this volume approach these same themes from different perspectives, as the film review and theopoetry do from the posture of worship.

In The Politics of Religion and the Rise of Social Catholicism in Peru (1884-1935) Ricardo Cubas Ramacciotti provides a lucid synthesis of the Catholic Church’s responses to the secularisation of the State and society whilst offering a fresh appraisal of the emergence of Social Catholicism and its contribution to social thought and development of civil society in post-independence Peru. Making use of diverse historical sources, Cubas provides a comprehensive view of a reformist yet anti-revolutionary trend within the Peruvian Church that, decades before the emergence of Liberation Theology and under divergent intellectual paradigms, developed an active agenda that addressed the new social problems of the country, including those of urban workers, and of indigenous populations.
