Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, University of Marburg (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), language: English, abstract: In the term paper at hand, Goethe’s famous poem "Prometheus" as well as Lord Byron’s same-titled ode will be taken into consideration. Both poetic works will be analysed and interpreted with regard to form, content, theme(s) and language, but – in the course of examination – priority is given to the motif of rebellion. Having investigated both poems, I shall compare them with each other in order to scrutinise what they have in common and in which points the treatments of the Prometheus myth differ from one another. At the end of this paper, it will have become clear that – despite some formal and stylistic similarities – Goethe’s and Byron’s lyric texts maximally contrast with each other, primarily when it comes to the question of how to rebel against (divine) subjugation.

Scientific Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Musicology, University of Greenwich (Greenwich Maritime Institute), course: 5th International Congress of Maritime History (IMEHA2008), language: English, abstract: Maritime hymns are part of what is generally referred to as 'maritime literature' - a term used for fictional and non-fictional texts about the sea. Maritime hymns are not just Christian hymns written for sailors. They take us on a metaphorical sea journey which surpasses any national and denominational boundaries. Comparing maritime hymns from Germany with those from England and the U.S. has revealed that the sea journey of the soul is an archetype which forms an intrinsic part of our European cultural and spiritual heritage.

Dambudzo Marechera burst onto the English literary scene with a bang in 1978 with this vivid roar of a book exploring township life in pre-independence Zimbabwe. Irreverent and uncompromising, Dambudzo Marechera rejected what he saw as the narrow stereotypes of African literature, and was a fearless critic of his country. The narrator expresses his desperate alienation - from his family, from his student friends, from township life and from Zimbabwe itself. This novella, and the other short stories here, portray an explosive world that flashes with both violence and humour.

Variously understood as literary genius and enfant terrible of African literature, Dambudzo Marechera's work as novelist, poet, playwright and essayist is discussed here in relation to other free-thinking writers. Considered one of Africa's most innovative and subversive writers, the Zimbabwean novelist, poet, playwright and essayist Dambudzo Marechera is read today as a significant voice in contemporary world literature. Marechera wrote ceaselessly against the status quo, against unqualified ideas, against expectation. He was an intellectual outsider who found comfort only in the company of other free-thinking writers - Shelley, Bakhtin, Apuleius, Fanon, Dostoyevsky, Tutuola. It is this universe of literary thought that one can see written into the fiction of Marechera that this collection of essays sets out to interrogate. In this important and timely contribution to African literarystudies, Grant Hamilton has gathered together essays of world-renowned, established, and young academics from Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia in order to discuss the important literary and philosophical influences that course through Marechera's prose, poetry and drama. From classical allusion to the political philosophy of anarchism, this collection of new research on Marechera's work makes clear the extraordinary breadth and quality of thought that Marechera brought to his writing. Grant Hamilton is Assistant Professor of English Literature at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the author of On Representation: Deleuze and Coetzee on the Colonized Subject (Rodopi, 2011), as well as a number of articles on contemporary African, postcolonial, and world literatures. He is currently working on his second book, Deleuze and African Literature.

In this poignant novel, award-winning author, Charles Mungoshi, explores the consequences of colonialism in 1960s Zimbabwe. Waiting for the Rain asks how a nation can look to the future and preserve its traditions while being tied down to the present tyranny of its oppressors. Told through multiple perspectives of the Mandengu family, Waiting for the Rain eloquently captures the generational effects of colonialism and the slow breaking of family bonds. Writing during the fiercest years of the Zimbabwe War of Independence, Mungoshi treads a fine line between criticising colonial rule and attempting to avoid British censorship. The result is an astute commentary on the challenges faced in 1960s Zimbabwe. 'Zimbabwe's finest and most versatile writer.' Petina Gappah 'The influence of Mungoshi's work cuts across generations, continents and cultures.' Professor Arthur Mutambara, former Zimbabwean Deputy Prime Minister
