The purpose of this book is to shed light on the rather unexplored "English facet" of Fernando Pessoa, considered one of the major Portuguese poets of the twentieth century. The originality of this study also lies in its extensive use of unpublished documents. Out of the bulk of Pessoa's English writings, The Mad Fiddler has been selected; it offers not only poems of better quality than most of his writings in English but it also has the advantage of being a complete and coherent suite of " mystical " poems. A systematic comparative study of the themes in The Mad Fiddler and in the poems by the four Portuguese heteronyms reveals a claer continuity and shows that Pessoa's bilingual Poetry is based on his main ontological quest, which he tried to solve by means of his dramatic scattering into " masks ". After this comparative analysis, the individuality of The Mad Fiddler is defined. Following an overwiew of the unpublished English writings found in the Pessoan legacy, The Mad Fiddler is analysed by means of Pessoa's own unpublished comments. An investigation of Pessoa's private French library and of his un published Literary Appreciations proves how fully he understood the impact of Symbolism on the evolution of Modern Art. The Mad Fiddler could indeed be viewed as an English echo of Pessoa's interest in modern trends in Literature and as a kind of " English microcosm " of Pessoa's aesthetic theory.

A la hora de aproximarse a la producción literaria de épocas pasadas, conviene tener en cuenta que las maneras de transmitir y de recibir la literatura han variado considerablemente a lo largo de la historia. Hoy, por ejemplo, solemos acceder a la literatura medieval a través de productos impresos o electrónicos. En este libro se intenta determinar, en la medida de lo posible y a partir fundamentalmente de evidencias textuales internas, la forma primaria de difusión y de recepción de los poemas en cuaderna vía del siglo XIII. A partir de ahí, se proponen posibles contextos receptivos coetáneos para el grupo de obras examinado y se estudian e interpretan algunos de los rasgos constatables en los textos conservados teniendo en cuenta sus formas primarias transmisión y de recepción.

Gaspara Stampa (1523?-1554) is one of the finest female poets ever to write in Italian. Although she was lauded for her singing during her lifetime, her success and critical reputation as a poet emerged only after her verse was republished in the early eighteenth century. Her poetry runs the gamut of human emotion, ranging from ecstasy over a consummated love affair to despair at its end. While these tormented works and their multiple male addressees have led to speculation that Stampa may have been one of Venice’s famous courtesans, they can also be read as a rebuttal of typical assumptions about women’s roles. Championed by Rainer Maria Rilke, among others, she has more recently been celebrated by feminist scholars for her distinctive and original voice and her challenge to convention. The first complete translation of Stampa into English, this volume collects all of her passionate and lyrical verse. It is also the first modern critical edition of her poems, and in restoring the original sequence of the 1554 text, it allows readers the opportunity to encounter Stampa as she intended. Jane Tylus renders Stampa’s verse in precise and graceful English translations, allowing a new generation of students and scholars of poetry, Renaissance literature, and music history to rediscover this incipiently modern Italian poet.
