Missak Manouchian est ne dans une famille de paysans armeniens dans la ville turque d'Ad yaman (ancienne capitale de la Commagene). Enfant, il perd son pere lors du genocide armenien de 1915, et sa mere meurt quelque temps apres, victime de la famine qui s'ensuivit. Lui-meme est sauve en etant recueilli par une famille kurde (ainsi que son frere Karabet). A la fin de la guerre, il est pris en charge par la communaute armenienne et transfere avec son frere dans un orphelinat de Jounieh en Syrie, passee sous controle francais en 1918 (mandat de la SDN a partir de 1920)....
