This is an interdisciplinary study of the missionary identity of a society devoted to mission ad gentes by one of the society’s members. This dissertation delineates how the Korean Missionary Society (KMS) invites a revisioning of mission ad gentes in regard to its historical, spiritual, and sociological aspects. In 1975, Bishop Jae-seon Choi founded the KMS in a spirit of gratitude for the missionaries Korea had received throughout history. From its establishment, the Korean Catholic Church thus began its international mission, and the numbers of Korean Catholic ad gentes missionaries has continuously increased. Foreign mission is not strage for Korean Catholics. While it was Korean lay persons who began the faithful community in 1784, without the missionary work of foreign missioners, subsequent foreign missions to Korea from other Churches in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries helped the Korean Church grow. The KMS, originating from the Korean Church, is raising new questions around mission ad gentes. What does foreign mission mean in the contemporary period? How does the KMS emerge from and influence the Korean Church? What is the unique character of the KMS and how does it see itself within it? This dissertation begins with a theoretical overview of mission ad gentes, presenting its validity and discussing some of its relevant elements today. Against this backdrop, the work examines mission ad gentes as conducted by foreign missionaries within the history of the Korean Church. It then explores mission overseas as conducted by Korean Catholic missionaries, analyzing some contributing factors and challenges. To understand the origin of the Korean missionary movement, Bishop Choi’s motivations for founding the KMS are presented. Furthermore, today’s inner/outer aspect of this apostolic society are described, drawing upon interviews with contemporary KMS members in order to study their articulated identity as missionary and priest. The Korean Church, which has changed from a mission-receiving church to a mission-sending church, is an example of not only a certain ecclesial maturity in the contemporary post-Vatican II ear, but also of a modern day international mission, one shaped by the numerical growth of Catholics in Korea, economic growth spurred by globalization, and the teachings of the Church. As a pioneer group of the Korean Catholic mission, the KMS is playing a significant role in promoting missionary zeal in the Church through its participation in a global mission emerging from a spirit of “gratitude and indebtedness,” “martyrdom,” and “Eucharist,” all core values stemming from its foundation in the post Vatican II era.
