Drawing on his own mission training and experience, John Sivalon believes the gospel can and must be inculturated in any culture, and he believes that postmodernism, rather than rendering Christian mission meaningless, breathes fresh insight, vision, and life into Vatican II's notion that mission is centred in the very heart of God.

Endorsements: It is here, under these trees on my desert island that this volume takes on meaning because its authors honestly struggle with and debate how we should relate to postmodernities. Should our response be accommodation, relativizing or counter-culture? How do we strike a balance between listening and understanding, and at the same time exploring how postmodernities influence the interpretation and application of the bible as the normative story of God's mission in the world? Some may consider 'postmodernities' a Western dilemma. The contributions from some writers in the Global South (China, India, and Korea) unfold a larger canvas and explore the implications for Christian mission. This focus on 'mission' is central: this in not just a book about the many facets and trends of postmodernities. It is a book about the implication for mission, for what it means to live as Christians and as churches in a terra incognito, in a world where we have not been before. We know how postmodernities influence the understanding of the gospel, and how it/they may make Christianity merely one local story among many. We have seen how 'truth' has become a plural word and how we are left 'personal preferences'. But we are not losing hope. Here is a volume to be studied under the trees, on how to understand, how to wrestle with and how to confront these challenges in a constructive way, on various levels and in various parts of the world. Let me therefore congratulate editors and conveners of study theme three for bringing together such a wide spectrum of contributors and laying the stones for a useful and stimulating discussion of what it implies to witness to Christ in a postmodern world. Knud Jørgenesen, PhD Adjunct Professor of Mission at MF Norwegian School of Theology and the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Hong Kong About the Contributor(s): Rolv Olsen is a teacher, pastor and administrator. He is a Norwegian Lutheran pastor, has a doctorate in theology, and for eleven years served as a missionary in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The label Generation X has been applied to those born since the early/mid 1960s and by their attitudes and outlook. This generation has shown itself to be the first influenced by post-modernity rather than modernity. Anecdotal evidence of the personal experience of Xers shows that they do not find it easy to fit into the culture and structures of much of the contemporary Western church, especially in its organizational forms such as mission agencies. If Generation Xers do world mission their way, what would it look like? Are new strategies, structures and methodologies needed or can the existing structures be changed to allow the Xer worldview to exist alongside others? Looking at how the 'Generation Xers' view mission, this book provides ideas and models for systematic organizational culture change as we seek to do postmission by a postmodern generation. Contributions come from England, Ireland, New Zealand and the US.

Bible And Mission written by Richard Bauckham and has been published by Baker Academic this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-01-01 with Religion categories.

This engaging study provides a new way of looking at Scripture--one that takes seriously the biblical idea of mission. Richard Bauckham shows how God identifies himself with particular individuals or people in human history in order to be known by all. He is the God of Abraham, Israel, and David and, finally, the one who acts through Jesus Christ. Bauckham applies these insights to the contemporary scene, encouraging those involved in mission to be sensitive to postmodern concerns about globalization while at the same time emphasizing the uniqueness of Christian faith. In doing so, he demonstrates the diversity of Christian faith around the world. This book will be rewarding reading for pastors, lay readers, and students of Scripture, mission, and postmodernism.

"The core narrative of the Christian faith, the book that conveys it (the Bible) and the institution of the church have all been marginalised by the development of modernity and post-modernity. Strangely, post-modernity has created an opportunity for religious thinking and experience to re-enter the lives of many. Yet post-modernity is not itself an adequate framework for thinking about life. There is therefore a new opportunity for Christians to imagine what comes after post-modernity and to prepare the church, its book and its story for a new missional engagement with western culture. With a boldly crafted vision this book does precisely that."--BOOK JACKET.

This text provides a comprehensive and definitive introduction to the literature, cultures, and theologies of the early Jewish and Christian traditions. Designed to be read with selected passages from the Bible and the Apocrypha, An Introduction to the Bible offers essential information to students with little or no experience in the academic study of religion. It will help students gain a solid background for future work in biblical studies. The revised edition includes information regarding new directions in biblical studies, a revised bibliography, and a subject index - as well as maps, charts and photographs.""This volume is pedagogically self-aware. Here speak teachers who live close to the teaching environment. The narrative account of a great deal of material is patient, attentive to detail, willing to pause to provide small instructional clues, all the time keeping the big picture in focus. This second edition of the book attests both to the vitality of its authors and to the positive reception the book has already enjoyed. Given the large cultural crisis upon us, such instruction in a context that reaches beyond ""the choir""

Exiles written by Michael Frost and has been published by Baker Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08-01 with Religion categories.

Exiles: Living Missionally in a Post-Christian Culture presents a biblical, Christian worldview for the emergent church--people who are not at home in the traditional church or in the secular world. As exiles of both, they must create their own worldview that integrates their Christian beliefs with the contemporary world. Exiles seeks to integrate all aspects of life and decision-making and to develop the characteristics of a Christian life lived intentionally within emerging (postmodern) culture. It presents a plea for a dynamic, life-affirming, robust Christian faith that can be lived successfully in the post-Christian world of twenty-first century Western society. This book will present a Christian lifestyle that can be lived in non-religious categories and be attractive to not-yet Christians. Such a worldview takes ecology and politics seriously. It offers a positive response to the workplace, the arts, feminism, mystery and worship. Exiles seeks to develop a framework that will allow Christians to live boldly and courageously in a world that no longer values the culture of the church, but does greatly value many of the things the Bible speaks positively about. This book suggests that there us more to being a Christian than meets the eye. It explores the secret, unseen nooks and crannies in the life of a Christian and suggests that faith is about more than church attendance and belief in God. Written in a conversational, easy-to-read style, Exiles is aimed at church leaders, pastors and laypersons and seeks to address complex issues in a simple manner. It includes helpful photographs and diagrams.
