Here is a young man wanting to start a life with the girl he loves and there is war looming on the horizon. Joseph has big decisions to make for a nineteen year old. He proves himself to be a man, as he fulfills his obligations and duties to family and country in a proud and honorable way. This story is a work of “truth and fiction”! It is the truth about my great grandfather and his time spent as a member of the Confederate States of America Army during the Civil War. The battles and places he fought are all recorded in history. His private life with my great grandmother, Sarah, is for the most part, is a creation of what I think their lives could have been. I write from the memory of stories my grandfather, now deceased, told me when I was young. I was never happier than sitting at his knee and listening to the tales he told of his family, all gone before he was a grown man. The location for this piece of history is the marshlands of eastern North Carolina behind Pamlico sound. It is an area that holds its own special beauty and the people are strong and rich in their heritage of the land and waterways. Joseph's love for his country and family are without doubt proven in this story. The trials, suffering of cold, hunger, and agony are brought to life as we live his story. The vernacular and nuances, colloquialism are all intentional, fitting the time and place. After struggling through four long years of battles, wounds, marching and loneliness, Joseph comes home to find his family torn asunder. Bushwhackers have attacked his father's home, leaving death behind and his sister kidnapped. Then he continues on to find Sarah. It quickly becomes clear that the war is far from over for Joseph.

It was a moonless night as the thick fog rolled across Marshfield Marsh, shrouding the twisted trees and murky waters in an eerie cloak. The air was thick with the scent of decay and damp earth, and a sense of foreboding hung heavy in the air. In the distance, the old Marshfield Manor loomed like a specter, its crumbling façade barely visible through the sinister mist. Inside the manor, a group of friends gathered for a weekend retreat. They were unaware of the dark history that surrounded the marsh, and as they laughed and joked, the malevolent mist crept closer, curling its tendrils around the ancient stone walls. Among the group was Emma, a no-nonsense skeptic who brushed off the local legends with a dismissive wave of her hand. "Ghosts and curses are just superstitions," she declared as she sipped her wine. But as the night wore on and the mist thickened, strange things began to happen. Lights flickered and faded, unexplained shadows slithered along the walls, and a chill settled over the manor that had nothing to do with the weather. The group's joking and laughter turned to nervous glances and hushed whispers. "I told you there was something off about this place," murmured Jake, a self-proclaimed horror enthusiast. As the tension mounted, the group gathered in the grand drawing room, searching for a rational explanation for the mounting unease. "Maybe it's just the old wiring," offered Amanda, trying to keep her voice steady. But her words were cut short by a blood-curdling scream that echoed through the manor, freezing the group in place.

CLASSIC EARLY HORROR IN THE STYLE OF MR JAMES BY A FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE "The haunted house story becomes a real nerve-shredder..." 'Adrian Ross' was a great name to conjure with in the early years of the 20th century. A founding father of 'musical comedy', this celebrated librettist wrote over two thousand lyrics and worked on around sixty popular musicals, including the hugely successful English versions of The Merry Widow and Lilac Time. In his completely different earlier life, under his own name of Arthur R. Ropes, he was a multi-talented Cambridge don, a Senior Fellow at King's College during the 1880s, alongside M.R. James. He composed two impressive works of supernatural horror fiction - both narrated by Cambridge scholars - which appear here together in one volume for the first time. Ross and James were among the first writers of the late nineteenth century who moved away from the familiar traditional Victorian ghosts to the much stranger world of centuries-old demons, all extremely dangerous and horrifying, defying any clear description. For example, the traditional haunted house tale takes a hideous descent into grave terror here. While the Collected Ghost Stories of M.R. James have been widely available for decades, it is now time for the collected horror fiction of 'Adrian Ross' to be available for the present 21st century generation. Will the rightful king be able to take his place to rule Gnometopia?

The Mistborn trilogy has become a firm favourite with fantasy fans the world over. The imagination that Sanderson brought to the series and his skill at marshalling epic storylines and dramatic action, his ability to create vivid characters made him a natural choice to complete Robert Jordan's epic wheel of time sequence. But with Mistborn, his standalone fantasies and his new series, The Stormlight Archive, Sanderson has shown his bountiful talents in his own fiction. Now he returns to the series that made his name with a new story set years after the events of Hero of Ages. In a world recovering only slowly from evil, a world where allomancers wield immense power through their ability to unleash the magic bound up in common metals someone who can burn metals that no-one has burned before can tip the balance... Sanderson has the knack of giving the epic fantasy reader exactly what they want. This ability has thrown him to the forefront of the genre and the dramatic story within The Alloy of Law shows off this skill to its very best.

What happens when an ordinary hunter is exposed to some rather extraordinary opportunities? From the first hunt in Canada’s British Columbia it’s easy to see that the guides and supporting staff are the heroes of these adventures. Too often they are the unsung and tireless professionals that make or break a hunter’s trip. In the end, it is their hunting prowess that makes for a successful hunt, whether or not an animal is taken. It all begins in the wilderness of British Columbia on hunts for elk, moose, caribou and mountain goat. The sheer vastness of the wilderness and rugged remoteness of the region adds an element of difficulty and danger not normally encountered in other locales. Add to that the presence of the fearless grizzly bears prowling the mountains and things can get dicey in the blink of an eye. “Some days you get the bear, and some days the bear gets you,” takes on an entirely new meaning as you start the day, hoping today doesn’t fall into either of those categories. From British Columbia the scene shifts to Wyoming for mule deer and turkeys followed by a whirlwind trip to South Africa for plains game. Barely back from South Africa long enough to do laundry, we headed off to Idaho on a spring black bear hunt. Two more trips to Wyoming followed for antelope and elk before heading back to South Africa for Kudu and Waterbuck. Between the last two Wyoming trips, our first grandchild was born and the second was on the way. That was the impetus for beginning to document the details of these trips. Someday, hopefully our grandchildren will be able to read about my experiences with the same interest I used to read about others’ hunts when I was a boy. Then maybe, just maybe one or more of them will find their way out to where the wild things live to see, hear, smell and feel for themselves what it’s like to be truly alive and free.
