El padre Alonso dirige con aprobación de la dirección del centro educativo y de las familias de los alumnos las clases de Historia y Religión en un colegio de Ávila, pero al mismo tiempo ha formado un coro de muchachos que canta en las fiestas litúrgicas y fin de curso, e interpreta con el armonio las partituras más clásicas. Uno de sus alumnos tiene una voz privilegiada y por ello se destaca como solista en las ocasiones más señaladas, a plena satisfacción de la familia del notario Abreu; por lo que el padre Alonso es invitado a pasar unos días en su mansión de Santillana del Mar, donde poseen un magnífico piano Steinway, que merece su máxima atención y con el que deleita a la familia Abreu en las veladas de los días en que permanece como invitado. El acierto en las composiciones que ejecuta y su personal atractivo como pianista atrae la atención de la bella Verónica, que en sus circunstancias personales se siente atraída de modo fulminante por el joven profesor de música, lo cual es advertido por el notario Abreu. Circunstancialmente, durante la estancia del padre Alonso en la mansión de Santillana se siente atraído por los volúmenes de la gran biblioteca y dirige su atención hacia los tomos que abarcan la Reforma luterana, que le producen una gran inquietud. Las reflexiones de sus lecturas le influyen sobre la fórmula adoptada en el Concilio de Nicea sobre el Credo de los Apóstoles, llevándole a la conclusión de que sería necesaria una actualización de su redacción. Al comentarlo con uno de los padres de su orden, el eco repercute de modo inmediato en los superiores, sometiéndole a un juicio disciplinario. De modo que lo obligan a abandonar los hábitos, solicitando el apoyo del notario Abreu para emprender una nueva vida. Este lo condiciona a que abandone cualquier contacto con Verónica. Ahí empieza el calvario del padre Alonso, que se siente igualmente atraído por la cuñada del notario. Cumpliendo la promesa contraída, se refugia primero como organista en el convento en Madrid de los Padres Servitas y, seguidamente, en el coro del convento de los franciscanos; con los que participa en una peregrinación a Tierra Santa, de la cual surge una amistad con el dueño de una tienda de música, encontrando un amparo. Es en esa tienda de música donde se reúne con un grupo de jóvenes, a los que instruye para formar una orquestina en un local conocido. En el grupo hay unas chicas liberadas con las que se producen encuentros musicales y otros de un contenido sentimental que incide en la conciencia del expadre Alonso. Sincrónicamente, a lo largo de la novela, Néstor, el auditor que fuera alumno predilecto del padre Alonso en Ávila, entrecruza su camino con Verónica, que se ha incorporado como letrada en la notaría de don Juan Abreu, que ha obtenido su traslado desde Ávila. Néstor, el antiguo alumno-amigo del padre Alonso siente un verdadero amor por Verónica, no correspondido por cuanto esta sigue guardando en su corazón los viejos arpegios del piano en Santillana del Mar. El grupo de jóvenes forman una orquestina y están en el momento de alcanzar un gran éxito. Dada la maestría con la que les ha dirigido el antiguo religioso, se vislumbra un pleno éxito de la vida cuando se produce un trágico final.

Anti-Literature articulates a rethinking of what is meant today by "literature." Examining key Latin American forms of experimental writing from the 1920s to the present, Adam Joseph Shellhorse reveals literature's power as a site for radical reflection and reaction to contemporary political and cultural conditions. His analysis engages the work of writers such as Clarice Lispector, Oswald de Andrade, the Brazilian concrete poets, Osman Lins, and David Vi–as, to develop a theory of anti-literature that posits the feminine, multimedial, and subaltern as central to the undoing of what is meant by "literature." By placing Brazilian and Argentine anti-literature at the crux of a new way of thinking about the field, Shellhorse challenges prevailing discussions about the historical projection and critical force of Latin American literature. Examining a diverse array of texts and media that include the visual arts, concrete poetry, film scripts, pop culture, neo-baroque narrative, and others that defy genre, Shellhorse delineates the subversive potential of anti-literary modes of writing while also engaging current debates in Latin American studies on subalternity, feminine writing, posthegemony, concretism, affect, marranismo, and the politics of aesthetics.

This book examines scholastic conceptions of final causality through the methods and concerns of historical theology. It argues the history of final causality is most profitably understood according to the interplay of regularity, order, and intentionality as interpretive categories. Within this analytic framework, the author explores the history and theological implications of final causality from Aristotle to Nicole Oresme, utilizing shifts in the dominant interpretive category to clarify how final causality could change from one of four co-equal explanatory strategies in Aristotle to the cause of causes in Avicenna to a merely metaphorical cause in Walter Chatton. Theological debates – ranging from questions of creation, the relationship of primary and secondary causality and of the ultimate good to secondary goods, the autonomy or instrumentality of nature, and the compatibility of chance with providence – motivated many of these changes. The chapters examine final causality in Aristotle and the commentorial tradition from late antiquity to medieval Arabic sources and then consider in detail various scholastic understandings and uses of final causality. The book will be of particular interest to scholars of historical theology, systematic theology, scholastic thought, and medieval philosophy.
