Obwohl als Roman geschrieben, sind die Ereignisse der Ardennenoffensive im Dezember 1944 für mich als Autor kennzeichnend für mein Leben gewesen. Ich habe versucht, mit eingehenden Worten erzählend, eine Antikriegsgeschichte zu schreiben, die aus dem eigenen Erleben und meiner direkten Betroffenheit erwachsen ist. Sie verharrt nicht in der bloßen Widergabe unmenschlicher Szenen, sondern führt über sie hinaus in humanes Denken und erteilt dem kriegerischen Hass eine Absage. Wegen aktueller politischer Ereignisse fühle ich mich im hohen Alter verpflichtet aufzuzeigen, wie nahe Alltag und Schuld beieinander liegen können. Ich tue dies angesichts der Tatsache, dass immer mehr Kräfte unserer Gesellschaft uns mit subtilen Mechanismen der Gewalt, durch alle Lebensbereiche hindurch permanent versuchen in den Griff zu bekommen. Die Ereignisse, die in einer Atmosphäre wie der Ardennenoffensive passieren konnten, scheinen mir besonders zu dokumentieren, wie hoch Menschen steigen und wie tief sie sinken können.
