Erforscht? Was hat der Tod des australischen Dokumentarfilmers Steve Irving mit der Tiefsee zu tun? - Eigentlich ziemlich wenig bis gar nichts! Und das ist genau der Punkt, den ich an diesem Buch bemängle: zu viel "Füllmaterial", zu viele Fragezeichen, Erzählungen und vage Vermutungen. Zugegeben, ein Forscherhandbuch über ein noch wenig erforschtes Gebiet zu schreiben, ist nicht einfach. Ob es überhaupt sinnvoll ist, entscheiden am besten die Lesenden selber. Dennoch: Oktopusse, Riesenkalamare, Tiefseehaie und selbst prähistorische Fische werden gut und leicht verständlich beschrieben. Ergänzt werden die Texte durch viele, detaillierte schwarz/weiss-Illustrationen und Fotos. Allerdings wirken die letzteren, bedingt durch Druck- und Papierqualität, etwas "verstaubt" und leider nur wenig aussagekräftig. Als Informationsträger können sie nur bedingt dienen und als Blickfang schon mal gar nicht. Fazit: durch eine Straffung des Inhalts und eine Verbesserung der Schwachstelle Fotos könnte dieses Buch sehr schnell einen zweiten oder gar dritten Qualifikations-Stern erlangen.
