This volume provides, for the first time, a pan-European view of the development of written languages at a key time in their history: that of the 16th century. Discourse and ideology are quintessential, albeit contested concepts in many functionally oriented branches of linguistics, such as linguistic anthropology, critical discourse studies, sociolinguistics, and sociology of language. With many ways of understanding and utilizing the concepts, the line between discourse and ideology can become blurry. This volume explores divergent ways in which the concept of ideology may be applied in different branches of sociolinguistics and the sociology of language, critical discourse studies, and applied linguistics. The goal is to provide an overview of the ways in which these two concepts can be used separately or together, emphasizing one or the other depending on the ways in which the concepts and their relationship are defined. The volume is targeted at scholars working in various fields of linguistics in which discourse and ideology are used as theoretical and analytical tools. While the target audience includes both senior and junior scholars, a particular goal is to reach junior scholars, who often struggle with the distinction between discourse and ideology and their theoretical and methodological potential. Methods in Linguistics is a collection of articles presenting a broad variety of methods and approaches in the field of linguistics. Nach der Beschreibung der Jenissej-Sprachen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts wendet sich der Verfasser nun den sechs belegten Jenissej-Sprachen des 18. Jahrhunderts zu, dem Arinischen, Assanischen, Jugischen, Ketischen, Kottischen und Pumpokolischen. Die im 18. Jahrhundert aufgezeichneten Lexiken dieser Sprachen sind nicht umfanglich, aber danach lassen sich 400 bis 500 jenissejische Etymologien feststellen, welche - erganzt durch die ubrigen jugischen, ketischen und kottischen Materialien - eine gute Grundlage fur die protojenissejische Rekonstruktion darstellen. Auf der Basis dieser sechs Lexiken werden die entsprechenden sechs Jenissej-Sprachen des 18. Jahrhunderts beschrieben. Im abschliessenden Kapitel der Monographie rekonstruiert Heinrich Werner die vorprotojenissejischen, fruhprotojenissejischen und spatprotojenissejischen Lautsysteme als Vorstufe zu einem umfassenden etymologischen Worterbuch dieser Sprachen.

Muotoutuvan Euroopan kohtalot, kielten vaiheet ja Danten ajatus "maailmasta isänmaana" ovat aiheina yhä ajankohtaisia. Teos jäi keskeneräiseksi, mutta se oli pioneerityö kielten synnystä, olemuksesta, leviämisestä ja käytöstä Euroopassa. Teos ilmestyy nyt ensi kertaa suomeksi Päivi Mehtosen ja Jaana Vaahteran suomentamana. Kaksikielinen editio tarjoaa lukijalle latinankielisen alkutekstin lisäksi laajan johdannon ja selitysosan.
