Estudio, dividido en tres tomos, perteneciente al largo proyecto de investigación que Georges Dumézil (1898-1986), historiador francés de las religiones, inició en 1938 acerca de los grandes fragmentos de la ideología, la teología y la mitología comunes a los pueblos indoeuropeos antes de sus migraciones. El trabajo del francés tuvo como principal resultado la identificación en las culturas indoeuropeas más antiguas de una ideología o estructura integrada por tres funciones interrelacionadas: la soberanía religiosa, la fuerza física y la fecundidad y ha sido una influencia de primer orden para reconocer en las estructuras de los materiales mitológicos el reflejo de las estructuras de las ideologías dominantes en los respectivos grupos sociales. Dumézil examina en el primer tomo de esta obra el Mahabharata indio, las historias de los orígenes de Roma y el ciclo de narraciones de los nartos, pueblo iranio, y su pervivencia entre los osetos de la región del Cáucaso como materiales donde son observadas las vinculaciones entre las funciones integrantes de la antigua estructura tripartita. El estudio prosigue con un segundo tomo, disponible en la Biblioteca del ITESO sólo en su versión original en lengua francesa y situado en el Fondo Suárez, en el que Dumézil trazó paralelismos entre personajes de los ámbitos indio, escandinavo, iranio e irlandés, en tanto el último volumen tiene por subtítulo histoires romaines y no está en la Biblioteca.
