SummaryNew mobile networks of the third and evolved second generation have beendeployed that enable a mobile accessible, always available wireless Internet. To exploit the full potential from those new mobile access networktechnologies, and to meet high user expectations, these networks need to bewell designed, dimensioned and deployed. An important basis for these tasksare accurate traffic models, and sound traffic estimates. However, suchknowledge does not yet exist for mobile networks. In this thesis, measurements from commercially deployed General PacketRadio Service (GPRS) networks are investigated to derive novel knowledge onmobile network usage and its traffic characteristics to fill this gap.As a prerequisite, a measurement setup has been developed, allowing parallelcapturing of user payload data at the level of IP packets and mobile networkspecific events related to session and mobility management. Based on thissetup we conducted the following four studies.First, a comprehensive study on the application and session usage in GPRS ispresented. It reveals the absolute dominance of the novel Wireless ApplicationProtocol (WAP) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) services, in terms oftraffic volume and usage frequency.Second, models for WAP and MMS application flows are derived. We showthat the distribution of the length of those flows is not heavy-tailed.Furthermore, we show that WAP and MMS flows are very short in terms ofnumber of packets exchanged per session.Third, the mobility of GPRS users is investigated. We develop a model for theso-called perceived mobility, based on GPRS mobility management events. Weshow that users are moderately mobile currently, leading to small impacts onperformance. According to our model the cell reselection inter-arrival times canbe best modeled with heavy-tailed distributions.Fourth, we assess the self-similarity property of GPRS traffic. We separatelystudy aggregated, web related and WAP related traffic. Based on thestatistically very robust Hurst estimation method by Abry and Veitch we showthat GPRS traffic arrival processes are long-range dependent (LRD).

GPRS is a packet based wireless communication service that offers data rates from 9.05 up to 171.2 Kbps and continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users. GPRS is based on GSM communications and complements existing services such as circuit switched cellular phone connections and the Short Message Service (SMS). GPRS represents the bridge between 2G and 3G mobile telecommunications and is commonly referred to as 2.5G. Implementation of GPRS requires modification of the existing GSM networks in that GSM is a circuit switched technology while GPRS is packet oriented. GPRS enables packet data (the same as is used by an Ethernet LAN, WAN or the Internet) to be sent to and from a mobile station - e.g. mobile phone, PDA or Laptop. WAP and SMS can also be sent using GPRS and individuals working with GPRS need to learn and understand how the mobile stations, the air interface, network architecture, protocol structures and signalling procedures must be modified. GPRS offers much higher data rates than GSM and can be combined with 3G technologies such as EDGE to give even higher bit-rates. It offers many benefits for customers and network operators: such as volume (rather then time) dependent billing and more efficient use of network resources. Due to the worldwide delay in implementing 3G solutions such as CDMA and UMTS the demand for GPRS is still growing. GPRS Networks: Offers detailed information ranging from standards to practical implementation Answers 'how' and 'why' rather than just simply re-stating GPRS specifications Provides comprehensive coverage in a single volume Essential reading for all telecommunications project managers, field engineers, technical staff in network operator and manufacturing organisations, GPRS application and service developers, Datacoms/IT engineers. The comprehensive coverage also makes this a superb reference for students of computer science, telecommunications and electrical engineering.

This book originated from several recent workshops and related activities conducted by the IFIP Working Group 7.6 on "Optimization-Based Computer Aided Modeling and Design." This group has been active for 20 years with the stated objective of developing ”high-performance computer-aided systems to support modeling, decision analysis, optimization and multi-criteria decision making.” Recently, the group has turned its attention to the application of modeling and optimization to service science, management and engineering (SSME). SSME is still a young research field searching for its theoretical underpinnings, and one which offers many opportunities for analytical modeling to not only advance the understanding, but also to help form the foundation of a new discipline. This book is the result of the group's introductory foray into the application of quantitative modeling to the nascent field of service science with special emphasis on the network aspects of services. The 11 papers presented are grouped into sections on Network Science, Comptational and Analytical Modeling, and Knowledge Science. They showcase the value of modeling in a new and timely context and provide many seeds for further exciting research.

Learn how to use service modelling to streamline and optimize processes! Information about customer needs, the technical composition of services, and service performance are fundamental to effective service management. Service modelling is a structured approach to utilizing this information to improve the way services are delivered. Consistent application of service modelling provides the automation of processes and timely access to information. Service Modelling presents a comprehensive, up-to-date overview of the topic, presented in the context both of business processes, and of requirements stemming from the need to manage network resources. Vilho Raisanen delivers a justification for service modelling, and explains state-of-the-art concepts, frameworks and standards in detail. Service Modelling: Provides a complete and illustrated overview of state-of-the-art concepts for service modelling, covering requirements and frameworks. Includes industry initiatives, conceptual frameworks, and the work of standardisation bodies. Discusses different modelling approaches, and the positioning of modelling of services in service management and in the wider operational context. Sets the modelling framework in the context of business drivers and modelling paradigms. Illustrates principles with real-world use cases, providing both fixed Internet and mobile network examples. Relates concepts to the work of TeleManagement Forum, giving practical examples throughout. Service Modelling: Principles and Applications is an invaluable guide to service modelling for telecommunications and data communications professionals, including vendors, operators, consultants, training organizations, service and content providers, system architects and engineers for IP-based services. Educational organizations, advanced undergraduate and graduate students on telecommunications and networking courses will also find this text invaluable.

Learning has been fundamental to the growth and evolution of humanity and civilization. The same concepts of learning, applied to the tasks that machines can perform, are having a similar effect now. Machine learning is evolving computation and its applications like never before. It is now widely recognized that machine learning is playing a similar role to electricity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in modernizing the world. From simple high school science projects to large-scale radio astronomy, machine learning has revolutionized it all—however, a few of the applications clearly stand out as transforming the world and opening up a new era. Machine Learning for Societal Improvement, Modernization, and Progress showcases the path-breaking applications of machine learning that are leading to the next generation of computing and living standards. The focus of the book is machine learning and its application to specific domains, which is resulting in substantial civilizational progress. Covering topics such as lifespan prediction, smart transportation networks, and socio-economic data, this premier reference source is a dynamic resource for data scientists, industry leaders, practitioners, students and faculty of higher education, sociologists, researchers, and academicians.
