This book presents the outcomes of the trans- and interdisciplinary research project NEMo (Nachhaltige Erfüllung von Mobilitätsbedürfnissen im ländlichen Raum - Sustainable Fulfilment of Mobility Needs in Rural Areas). Due to demographic change, it is becoming increasingly difficult for rural districts and communities to maintain a basic set of public transport services such as bus and train transit without encountering issues regarding necessary social participation, sensible regional value creation and, last but not least, achievable environmental protection goals. At the same time, the demand for mobility in rural areas will continue to rise in the future, e.g. due to the concentration of medical care facilities and shopping centres close to cities. Focusing on the development of sustainable and innovative mobility services and business models, this book explains how new mobility offers can be created in which citizens themselves become mobility providers. To do so, it combines the findings of the individual research groups with external contributions from science and practice.

This book gathers contributions to the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project INDIMO (Inclusive Digital Mobility Solutions), its sister projects DIGNITY (Digital Transport in and for Society) and TRIPS (Transport Innovation for Persons with Disabilities Needs Satisfaction), which have been focusing on making transport systems inclusive and accessible for all. Digitalization has enabled the emergence and proliferation of novel, ‘disruptive’ transport and delivery services. These services are often exclusively only available through digital channels such as a smartphone app or website. Yet a substantial segment of the population is at risk of being excluded from these services for a variety of reasons. Therefore, it is strongly necessary to integrate inclusivity and accessibility into the design and operation of mobility services. This book aims at discussing cases of and reasons for digital exclusion in transport. It also investigates the role of participatory and user-centric planning and design methods in making digital mobility more inclusive and accessible. Further, it discusses tools and technologies that could help policy makers to develop digital mobility as a more inclusive and accessible service. This is an open access book.

An der Wende zum dritten Jahrtausend k ndigt sich in den industrialisierten Staaten eine "Revolution auf leisen Sohlen" an. Mit dieser Aussage beginnt der erste Zwischenbericht der Enquete-Kommission "Demographischer Wandel - Herausforderungen unserer lter werdenden Gesellschaft an den einzelnen und die Politik" (vgl. DT. BUNDESTAG 1994: 5). Die sich abzeichnenden demographischen Ver nderungen ber hren nahezu alle Bereiche des ffentlichen Lebens und gehen an diesen nicht folgenlos vor ber. W hrend die Auswirkungen der zuk nftigen Bev lkerungsentwicklung z.B. f r die Bereiche "Arbeitsmarkt" und "Soziale Sicherungssysteme" ausf hrlich thematisiert werden, finden die Konsequenzen der zu erwartenden demographischen Trends f r den Bereich "Verkehrsentwicklung/ Verkehrsplanung" unbegr ndet bisher nur wenig Beachtung: Anlass genug also, so SCHEINER, sich dar ber Gedanken zu machen (vgl. Die Diplomarbeit "Mobilit t von Senioren" befasst sich mit dieser Aufgabe und widmet sich speziell den Herausforderungen des demographischen Wandels f r den ffentlichen Personennahverkehr ( PNV). Im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung steht dabei die Problematik demographisch induzierter Ver nderungen der Verkehrsnachfrage. Infolge von Schrumpfungs- und Alterungsprozessen wird sich in den kommenden Jahrzehnten das Fahrgastpotenzial des PNV ver ndern, vielerorts sogar verringern. Die barrierefreie Mobilit t verk rpert ein aktuelles Thema und st dtebauliches Entwicklungsziel, das vor dem Hintergrund einer zunehmend alternden Gesellschaft noch an Bedeutung gewinnt. In den 1990er Jahren erlangt die Behindertenforschung auch innerhalb der deutschsprachigen (Sozial-) Geographie an Beachtung, nimmt hier jedoch im Gegensatz zur angels chsischen Geographie bis heute eher eine Randposition ein. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt zun chst den gesellschaftlichen Wandel im Umgang mit Behinderung und dessen Voraussetzungen auf, um die Ursachen und die Tragweite der Problematik zu verdeutlichen. Der Ursprung des Konzeptes der Barrierefreiheit ist ohne Zweifel in den Richtlinien zum behinderten- und altengerechten Bauen zu finden, die seit den 1970er Jahren ver ffentlicht wurden. Die Arbeit gibt Aufschlu ber die politischen und juristischen Entwicklungen, die das Ziel der Barrierefreiheit verankern und somit die wesentliche Grundlage f r die Umsetzung, aber auch die damit verbundenen Probleme darstellen. Die Bewertung des Umsetzungsstandes und der Umsetzungsm glichkeiten barrierefreier Mobilit t stellt heraus, dass es sich bei der Herstellung von Barrierefreiheit um einen hohen Anspruch handelt, der in n herer Zukunft in seiner Gesamtheit nicht realisierbar ist. Demzufolge wird ein Handlungsbedarf f r kurzfristige L sungen identifiziert und ein Potenzial in der Verbesserung der Information mobilit tsbehinderter Menschen gesehen. Anhand des Beispielgebietes Treptow-K penick (Berlin) erfolgt die Konzeption und Umsetzung einer Prototyp-Anwendung mit dem UMN-MapServer, die dabei wichtige Rahmenbedingen aufzeigt und ber cksichtigt.

Die Verkehrsentwicklung der letzten Jahrzehnte in Deutschland war vor allem von einer Zunahme der zurückgelegten Strecken und einer Zunahme des PKW-, LKW- und Luftverkehrs geprägt. Die damit verbundenen negativen Konsequenzen waren seit mindestens 30 Jahren Anlass, neue Planungskonzepte für Verkehrsvermeidung, Verkehrsverlagerung und kompatibleres Verkehrsmanagement zu entwickeln. Deutliche Erfolge zeigen sich allein hinsichtlich einer verträglicheren Abwicklung, punktuelle Erfolge hinsichtlich der Verkehrsverlagerung, allerdings bei gleichzeitiger Zunahme der zurückgelegten Distanzen, die sich aus zahlreichen, gesellschaftlich erwünschten Entwicklungen speist. Die Beiträge des Forschungsberichtes befassen sich mit den vielfältigen Wechselwirkungen von Mobilität und räumlicher Entwicklung vor dem Hintergrund sozialer und technologischer Veränderungen. "Most Western national governments aim to influence individual travel patterns - at least to some degree - through the spatial planning of residential areas. Nevertheless, the extent to which the characteristics of the built environment influence travel behaviour remains the subject of debate among travel behaviour researchers. This work addresses the role of residential-self-selection, an important issue within this debate. Households may not only adjust their travel behaviour to the built environment where they live, but they may also choose a residential location that corresponds to their travel-related attitudes. The empirical analysis in this thesis is based on data collected through an internet survey and a GPS-based survey, both of which were conducted among homeowners in three centrally located municipalities in the Netherlands. The study showed that residential self-selection has some limited effect on the relationship between distances to activity locations and travel mode use and daily kilometres travelled. The results also indicate that the inclusion of attitudes can help to detecting residential self-selection, provided that studies comply with several preconditions, such as the inclusion of the 'reversed' influence of behaviour on attitudes." -- BACK COVER.
