In situ measurements of F-region irregularity amplitude and ambient electron density made by the retarding potential analyzer (RPA) on OGO-6 near perigee altitude of 400 km have been utilized to derive the variation of electron density deviation over the equatorial region. Based on these measured electron density deviations and other assumed model parameters, including a three-dimensional power-law form of irregularity spectrum of index 4, a model of equatorial scintillations is developed in the framework of diffraction theory. The percentage occurrence contours of estimated equatorial scintillations greater than or equal to 4.5 dB at 140 MHz during 1900 to 2300 LMT for the period November to December 1969 and 1970 have been derived. The model is found to depict a pronounced longitude variation with the scintillation belt width and percentage occurrence being maximum over the African sector. The latitude extent of the spatial scintillation belt narrows over the American sector without much decrease in the scintillation occurrence whereas over the Indian and Far Eastern sectors both the extent and the occurrence are found to decrease. The percentage occurrence of scintillations estimated from this model is found to be consistent with VHF scintillation measurements at Ghana, Huancayo, and Calcutta. In addition, the model was found to be in qualitative agreement with GHz observations at various longitudes made by the COMSAT group. The effect of varying model parameters on scintillation estimates at VHF, UHF and GHz are discussed. Implications of the observed longitudinal variation of scintillations on current theories of equatorial irregularity formation are indicated. (Author).

Modelling Of Equatorial Phase And Amplitude Scintillations From Ogo 6 And Ae Irregularity Data written by Sunanda Basu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1979 with categories.

The technique of modelling equatorial phase and amplitude scintillations from in-situ measurements of irregularity amplitude, ambient ionization density and irregularity power spectrum is outlined. The in-situ measurements do not directly provide information on irregularity layer thickness for which radar backscatter observations are utilized. The equatorial scintillation models developed from OGO-6 and AE-C in-situ measurements during the two solstices are presented. Considerable differences in the longitude variation of scintillations are predicted during the two solstices. The model estimates are in good agreement with the available ground based phase and amplitude measurements. Problems associated with the use of bottomside spread-F data for transionospheric propagation modelling at VHF/UHF are also discussed. (Author).

Modelling Of Ionospheric Irregularities And Total Electron Content written by S. Basu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983 with categories.

F-region irregularities near the equator are viewed from the concept of the temporal structure of UHF scintillations and the electron content depletions associated with VHF, UHF and GHz scintillations. Near the equatorial anomaly crest, the solar cycle effect on GHz scintillation and the depolarization of VHF satellite signals are probed along with electron density irregularities using in-situ data coupled with VHF/GHJz scintillation. Occurrence of nighttime VHF scintillation in the Indian sector near the anomaly is addressed. In the midlatitude sector, coordinated incoherent scatter radar, total electron content and scintillation measurements are studied in the investigation of the generation of km-scale irregularities which spatial variability of total electron content is analyzed in the Mediterranean region. At high latitudes, in-situ measurements provide the opportunity for scintillation modelling which low-energy electron precipitation measurements have been correlated with scintillations/TEC in the auroral oval. The nature of ionospheric irregularities generated by high-power, high-frequency heating has also been investigated and shown to vary between two sites studied.

Model Computations Of Radio Wave Scintillation Caused By Equatorial Bubbles written by A. W. Wernik and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1979 with categories.

The apparent inhomogeneous nature of the equatorial electron density irregularities indicate that a new approach to the scintillation theory is required. Based on the available in situ electron density measurements and theoretical information a simple two-dimensional, deterministic model of the equatorial bubble is developed. The parabolic equation for a wave traversing such a bubble is solved numerically. The computed amplitude pattern suggests that wave diffraction on edges formed by sharp horizontal electron density gradients may be a possible cause of scintillation at gigahertz frequencies. Comparison with the results obtained for a model of random irregularities with the same power spectrum shows that the medium characterized by sharp electron density gradients leads to stronger scintillation in a wide frequency range. The amplitude pattern, scintillation index, frequency dependence and scatter plots computed for the model agree well with observations. (Author).

Updating a review of the global morphology of ionospheric scintillations published in 1971, this study adds additional experimental studies on familiar topics to newer types of measurements of ionospheric irregularities, including in situ experiments and artificial heating of the F-layer.

A triennial summation of the state of the art in radio science This book is the fourth in the modern series of triennial reviews prepared by the International Union of Radio Science to further communication and understanding of the status and future of radio science, both for those working in the field, and for those who want to know what is of current importance in this area. The International Union of Radio Science, URSI (Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale), has divided the subject of "Radio Science" according to the ten topics of the Scientific Commissions that make up URSI. This volume consists of thirty-eight original, peer-reviewed papers. Each paper provides a critical, in-depth review of–and, in many cases, tutorial on–advances and research that have been of significant importance within the area of interest of the Commissions during the past three to four years. Among the topics covered are: Electromagnetic metrology Fields and waves Signals and systems Electronics and photonics Electromagnetic noise and interference Wave propagation and remote sensing Ionospheric radio and propagation Waves in plasmas Radio astronomy Electromagnetics in biology and medicine With an included CD-ROM of the full book text, allowing the user to do full-text searching of all the papers, the Review of Radio Science: 1999—2002 is a resource of vital importance to anyone working in, or with an interest in, radio science.
