El lago Laja representa la mayor reserva de energía acumulada del sistema interconectado central de Chile. Uno de los principales problemas en la gestión de los recursos hídricos superficiales, tales como embalses, lagos y lagunas, entre otros, es la estimación de todos los componentes del balance hídrico: caudal de entrada, caudal de salida, precipitación, percolación y evaporación. Normalmente la percolación y evaporación son los más difíciles de medir o estimar. Este conocimiento es clave para la regulación del suministro de agua en respuesta a la demanda. Estudios anteriores indican que el lago presenta una evaporación de 1,9 m3 s-1 equivalente a aproximadamente 1900 ha de riego en una temporada. En enero (22 al 28/01), marzo (17 al 23/03) y noviembre (09 al 15/11) del 2016 se midióla evaporacióny las principales variables medioambientales que afectan a ésta con un sistema Eddy Covariance. Las alturas de agua evaporada en promedio para las jornadas de mediciones fueron de 3,40, 3,38 y 1,89 mm día-1respectivamente, las mediciones fueron comparadas con la estimación de 25 modelos, 4 capaces de predecir la evaporación de forma diaria y 21 de forma horaria.Los mejores métodos de estimación se obtuvieron con los modelos cuyo principio de evaporación es el flujo de calor y el flujo de vapor de agua.
