In response to the increased influence of space forces on today's battlefield, several theater level models were analyzed for the presentation of space forces. These models were the Extended Air Defense Simulation (EADSIM), the Joint Theater Level Simulation (JTLS), the Integrated Theater Engagement Model (ITEM), the Tactical Warfare Model (TACWAR), Thunder, Janus, and the Aggregate Level Simulation Protocol (ALSP). While ALSP is not a model but a simulation protocol connecting various models, it was studied because it appears to be the future of modeling. The consensus of the analysis was that space forces are virtually ignored by most of the models and when space was considered, the dynamic nature of the systems involved were not captured. The Air Force Cornmand Exercise System (ACES) was chosen to determine how the effects of space forces can be implemented into theater level models. ACES is a discrete event combat simulation designed to support intermediate and senior service schools in teaching Air Force doctrine within the context of a theater warfare exercise. Its primary focus is to allow specific educational goals to be taught. This research focused on both the present modeling of space forces within widely used theater level models and a methodology to incorporate space forces into models that lack the influence of space. The Gulf War exposed how important functions performed from space can be to the success of a combat forces. Because of the practicality of space's influence, a picture of today's battlefield that does not include space forces is incomplete.

Sponsored by the Air Force Wargaming Institute (AFWI), this research developed improvements to the Air Force Command Exercise System (ACES), a wargame model used extensively in the education of air campaign planning. The research addressed two major limitations of the model: (1) an inability to simulate time increments longer than 24 hours and (2) a minimal simulation of naval action. Alleviating these limitations, the Advanced Combat Timeline (ACT) for ACES should significantly enhance the model's ability to simulate the operational level of war. In pursuing these improvements, the research team clarified the model's educational objectives, analyzed its current data structure, and designed changes to effect the desired capabilities. A review of relevant literature provided criteria by which to evaluate the proposed changes. To ensure the efforts' effectiveness, the research team conducted its activities in close coordination with AFWI personnel. The resulting recommended changes to the ACES wargame model include: (1) a methodology by which players can translate general operational objectives into specific rules for force employment; (2) decision criteria such that the simulation results remain within reasonable, practicable bounds; and (3) a description of relevant naval weapon systems, their operational characteristics, and rules for their employment. AFWI programmers will use the research results as a blueprint to modify the model software. The resulting changes will enhance the ACES model's representation of the operational level of war and improve its utility in airpower education.

The Air Force Space Command (AFSPACECOM) uses an analytic satellite motion model based an the Brouwer theory, referred to as SGP4, for near-earth objects, and another satellite motion model based on the work of Hujsak, referred to as SDP4, for deep-space objects. These models assist in tracking over 7000 objects around the Earth each day. original satellite motion model used by the AFSPACECOM based on the work of Kozai and Brouwer, known as the Simplified General Perturbations model or SGP, is an analytic model still being used at several sites. Based on the increasing number of space objects that require tracking and the desire for accuracy, there is a growing need to reduce computation time in implementing satellite motion models. Parallel computing offers one method to achieve this objective. This thesis investigates the parallel computing potential of SGP, SGP4, and SDP4 using the Intel iPSC/2 hypercube multicomputer. This thesis chooses a parallel algorithm and applies it to SGP, SGP4, and SDP4 for implementation on the hypercube, and reports on the potential reduction in computer time by first considering only the calculational portion of the algorithm and then including the effects of the reading and writing portions. A diskette containing the Fortran software developed is available upon request from bneta moon.math.nps, navy.mil.

From the authors' abstract: "This analytical study looks at the importance of Deep Space Operations and recommends an approach for senior policy leaders. Section 1 presents a capability requirements definition with candidate solutions and technology strategies. Section 2 recommends an acquisition and organizational approach. Section 3 provides an extended strategic rationale for deep space operations as a national priority." And from the Introduction: [this essay] "presents capability requirements, potential solutions, and strategic rationale for achieving movement and maneuver advantage in deep space. In this context, deep space is anything beyond geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO). Driving the research are two primary assumptions underpinning the need for investment in deep space propulsion. The first assumption is that growing international activity, commerce, and industry in space extends the global commons, thus creating a military-economic imperative for the United States Department of Defense (DoD) to expand its protection of U.S. interests by defending space lines of communication. Although there are wide-ranging reasons to expand the space-faring capabilities of the human species, from the capitalistic to the existential, the fact of its occurrence offers the U.S. immense strategic opportunity. Section 1, operating on this assumption, recommends capability-based requirements for deep space operations given a projected future operating environment. The second driving assumption underpinning this study is that improved movement and maneuver capabilities in deep space offer a wide array of benefits for the current National Security Enterprise, and for this reason alone demands attention in the form of disciplined investment. Furthermore, because the core functional capability required for deep space operations is in-space propulsion, the requirement necessitates a materiel solution.
